Brooklyn Pirate Radio WFAT

Uploaded by: hankhayes
Video Description:
WFAT 1620 AM Brooklyn, New York. Circa 1980. This film features DJs Hank Hayes, Jim Nazium, and the FCC agents that kept busting them, Judah Mansbacj and Alexander Zimney.
WHOT went on to be an AM and FM operation covering heard in 19 states, two time zones in the US and Canada. All we wanted to do was go wild and do fun shows. These two DJs are still up to their fun antics every Friday night at www.HankandJim.com

I remember this ... ( 1 year ago by sirdarklust)
I remember this clip from the TV show it was on a long time ago. Tom Leykis had something to do with the show. No wonder it lasted four or five episodes. Anyway, WHOT was a crap staion, as were the other NYC based ones of the day, like Stereo 9, etc. Losers not good enough to be in real radio and not willing to accept that fact.

WFAT was great station, I loved every broadcast I would happen to hear. I called in a few times.
I had a digital receiver, and one time when I told them the exact freq I was hearing them on, I recall the guy on the phone there didn't like that too much, maybe thought I was the FCC playing him. I read that they had the antenna strung between two building roofs. They had a great signal. I had
a monstrous wire antenna on the roof an apartment building in Queens, we had similar methods.

I want to dedicate this vid to KBMD (Elgin, Oregon), and Dr. Hoot, and pirate stations that popped up in Heppner, La Grande and Klamath Falls, OR also in the early 1980's. Even the local daily paper thought KBMD was legit and did a full page article on the station as "Union County's Newest Radio Station"! Ha! The manager of KLBM snipped the ad out of the paper the next day & I knew the FCC was comin'...

I'm now listening to 6.955 MHz, LSB with my Yaesu FT-450 DSP radio. There always seem to be some 'Pirates' broadcasting on this frequency around sundown and after, and especially on weekends!

Love to listen to 'Pirate Radio' stations! Just heard 'Wolverine Radio' on 6.925 MHz (USB) with a '15 over 9' signal on my Icom 756 Pro3 receiver (using a PAR End Fedz shortwave wire antenna). Seems that this frequency, and 6.955 MHz is hot these days!

Funny! Most of us are in 'real' radio. WHOT was a hobby. Where else could we go as wild as this?

Hi Fania! Great to see a WFAT listener/caller here! We did, indeed, string up a 110 foot longwire between two apt. buildings on WFAT. We got out pretty good with 40 watts.
I'm not a 'Pirate' ... ( 3 months ago by sophiegromit)
I'm not a 'Pirate' myself (don't have the balls!), but the easiest way to get on the air would be to use a small HF Ham transceiver with about 50 or 100 watts out from a car (use mobile antenna) on 6.925 or 9.955 MHz (this is where I hear the most Pirate Radio stations these days, especially on weekends)! If you move locations, the FCC will have a bitch of a time finding you! LOL! It's all 'common sense'.

You guys are my heroes, i got f***ed off ofcom they are the fcc but based in the uk i got busted for doing the same thing, my house at the time was over 900 feet above sea level with over 1000 watts of erp power i was transmitting all over the Manchester area but was soon tracked down because of the amount of power i was using, you guys are cool & didn't care the fcc was after you, you guys have my respect!!.. fcc sucks & so does ofcom let the pirates play & entertain the public.
