It is a basking shark. It is obvious to an anatomist that they are dealing with a shark carcass that is rotting to the point the jaws, along with the gill region, has fallen off. The appendicular skeleton and the chondrocranium is still in place. If I remember correctly they did keep some tissue and that was matched to sharks as well..

Calling it a basking shark or a "living fossile" are a typical explaination without any foundation based on facts. Its just silly.

Bloody narrow minded scientists will call everything rotting whale or shark. Never learn their lesson. They were laughing stock when the Coelocanth, Giant squid and Gorilla were proven some years ago. They had been denying the existance of Gorillas as fantasy for many years.

These things get tested when they appear and are nearly always proven to be rotting whale blubber. So, it's not really a case of narrow-minded scientists. Just a case of people trusting that patterns will repeat themselves. The coelacanth and giant squid etc. were proven to exist after complete (i.e., non-rotting and identifiable) specimens were found and properly documented. That's how science should work.
