Nice, this is good. I have loved the KT since their college tours in the late '50's. But Gord Lightfoot, who wrote it is , IMHO the Greatest performer of this song.

This is not the original line up. The only one of the three here from the original line up is Bob Shane-the gray-haired singer who does the intro...

Bob, Nick, Dave / John, sure TKT never sounded that good afterwards, but still this is good vocals, but, FGS, who put that banjo in there? Ruined the whole thing.

There was always a banjo. We had a group in the late '60s. Who didn't have a group? And there were about 20 guitars and ya hadda have a banjo....

Great video. I saw them in Los Altos, California at Chuck's Celler. They were on with the Limeliters. It was a great night.

Well, the original KT had dozens of great banjo numbers - but not this one when they recorded it on their 1965 album "Something Else." It was guitars only with a bit of extra instrumental backing - but no banjo. They added the banjo when George Grove (here) joined the group in 1976. I prefer the guitars, myself.

Regarding banjo in arrangement: Joke What is a perfect pitch? When you throw the banjo into the garbage can without hitting the rim. In this version I find the banjo kind of an annoying plink plink distraction.
From a musical ... ( 6 months ago by mrmesq53)
From a musical perspective, the function of the banjo here is to replace the fast strumming that usually is used for this number. The quick plucking of the Banjo juxtaposed with the half and whole notes of the verse and chorus is designed for both contrast and to just keep the song moving. Speaking as a guitar player, there is nothing more irritating than fast picking in perfect time with two other instruments. The banjo solves that problem here. Having said that, I don't care for it either.

You're barking up the wrong tree. This guy (George Grove) is the finest banjoist EVER to play in any folk group at ANY time. One of the real innovative arrangements. The Trio used to play this song, in the John Stewart days, without the banjo. This version of EMR is the BEST ever sung.

This version starts growing on you after listening to it a few times. But, I still think Ian & Sylvia's version from their album
of the same name in the mid 60s is still the best.

This is very good. I hadn't heard him do it before. He uses the PPM minor chord variant of the song which I like better than the Lightfoot major chording. Still nothing better than the PPM version.

P, P & Mary do a good job. As do the Kingston Trio. Very flattering, I am sure it was for Gordon Lightfoot. But, Lightfoot still has the best version. Plaintive, haunting, truly a feeling of a lost soul so down and out. The others do the song well, but miss the feeling.

I'll say you are right about the very personal feeling of the Lightfoot version. It is a story that seemed to happen to him. I myself like the PPM chording, with the minor chord, as a way of playing it, but their song is by no means as personal. PPM version makes it more of an impersonal ballad. Which I like.

Condolences to Nick Reynold's family. He passed away on Wednesday of this week. He was one of the founding members of this group. He is not seen here, but his contribution will be missed. So sorry.
