Ruffian - 1974 Sorority Stakes

Uploaded by: cf1970
Video Description:
http://HORSERACEGAME.com Ruffian holds off the game Hot n' Nasty to remain unbeaten after 4 starts.
Frank Y. Whiteley trained champions such as Tom Rolfe, Damacus, and Forego, but he is best remembered as the trainer of Ruffian. Two days after her death he glanced at her old stall at Belmont and said, "That stall will never be occupied as long as I have this barn. There'll never be another horse worthy of entering it."

The only reason that she ALMOST lost, was because she had a greenstick fracture in her right leg. She STILL won!

Ruffian wasn't right in this race. Jacinto Vasquez said later that she wouldn't change her leads. Whiteley knew what he had, otherwise he wouldn't have out her in that situation

Take a GOOD LOOK at when they are coming into the stretch when facing head-on to the camera....look at the SIZE differance between Ruffian (on the inside) and Hot n' Nasty (on the outside). Ruffian was a MONSTER compared to Hot n' Nasty!!!

I have the DVD of ther movie. Bought it the day it came out. I still get tingles watching that beautiful girl just demolish everyone she ever raced. She was an equine Wonder Woman..an equine freak of nature. To quote the great Lucian Lorean, the trainer of Secretariat, "As God as my witness, she may be even BETTER than Secretariat..."
I agree. The DVD is ... ( 11 months ago by cf1970)
I agree. The DVD is good, the actual archived footage is even better. Lucien Laurin's quote is very interesting indeed. While he was a very good trainer, he was also VERY pessimistic and slow-to-believe in Secretariat's otherworldly abilities. It's not surprising that he would say that Ruffian MAY be better than SEC. I highly doubt it. She MAY have given SEC a good run at 6F or less, but at anything longer than that, I strongly believe that SEC would have thumped her. Thanks for the comments.

Yes indeed, Ruffian was massive compared to most fillies, and to some colts. She was a true wonder in equine history. Take care.

You know they also say that Ruffian's breakdown was in her genes. Her sire had broken down TWICE and her dam wasn't very sound either, and if you look ahead to 1990 (Go for Wand) and 2006 (Barbaro) some of the same lineage shows up in THEIR pedigrees as well..... (cont)
....AND if you look ... ( 11 months ago by GloomyGrayDonkey)
....AND if you look at Pedigree lineage as a whole on BOTH sides, especially with Ruffian, a good 65% to 70% of that family tree had leg problems in one varying form or another. I know ALOT about this stuff because I grew up around Thoroughbreds and was a Groom/Excersize Rider for 12 years. (cont)

I've been on a few of the best in the mornings. I also happen to be friends with a lady named Charlsie Canty who was Ruffian's Excersize Rider back then working for Frank Whiteley. I had to laugh at Sam Shepard's portrail of Frank in the movie. He had him dead on as Frank was a rather difficult man to work for and get along with, but he sure knew his horses.

One more thing ... I was and still am honored to have been associated with not one, BUT TWO Kentucky Derby winners and was with BOTH of them walking over to the paddock and even in the Winning Photo with both of them. Sunny's Halo and Pleasant Colony, AND I was friends with PC's 18 year old jockey back then, Ronnie "Ron" Franklin.

Yes, as far as I know it was Native Dancer who carried that "tend to break down" gene. He was Ruffian's grandfather and as Dancer sired approx. 300 foals, many thoroughbred can carry that trait. I will find out if Barbaro had Native Dancer in his pedigree.

Well...I do not think it is true - it could not have been easy to keep beside Ruffian so long, so Hot n'Nasty was also a great one
Ruffian had a ... ( 8 months ago by GloomyGrayDonkey)
Ruffian had a hairline fracture in her right hind in this race but they only found out about it after her next race when they took x-rays and saw it, so she ran this race with an injury and she was clearly not herself. She wasn't putting up her usual blazing fractions in this race either. She could had snatched a knot upside Hot'n'Nasty's head if she would have been truely sound, which she wasn't, but being the true champion she was in '74 she dominated. This is also her closest winning finish.
She didnt have the ... ( 7 months ago by Ruffian4Ever)
She didnt have the hairline fracture then, she got that during training before the Frizette. In this race she actually popped a splint. Nothing that makes a horse extremely lame, but it does hurt. The fact that she ran on that splint and won proves that she had heart, but we all knew that already!
Yes I know that ... ( 7 months ago by GloomyGrayDonkey)
Yes I know that popped splints hurt. I worked with thoroughbreds for 12 years and was an excersize rider in the mornings for a good part of that time as well as a groom and have taken care of those dern popped splints and hairlines and horse's who "grab their quarters" and onjes who rundown and need rundown patches and vetwraps that make their legs look like mummies just in order to run a freakin' race, so yeah, I know all about that stuff... :-)
Dont freak out, I ... ( 7 months ago by Ruffian4Ever)
Dont freak out, I was just telling you it wasnt the hairline fracture in her right hind, that it was the popped splint, that made her run not her best. I know you know your stuff, was just stating it for anyone who didnt.
Understood, oh ... ( 7 months ago by GloomyGrayDonkey)
Understood, oh great Ruffian lover. GAWDS I would have given ANYTHING just to be in her presence ... truely THE QUEEN Of Fillies ... heh, and most colts for that matter. Colts back then (and now for that matter) wouldn't have been wanting to beat her, even though they probably couldn't, just for the sheer pleasure of just running along behind her just to view her gorgious hindquarters cuz' she had a MASSIVE rump on her as well as a massive everything else. *chuckles*

The jocky never should have touched her with the whip - There's no way that she would've let the other horse pass her.
