Yes, he did. He was invited to speak at a university in Chile and later Augusto Pinochet asked Friedman if they could meet. The meeting was only an hour in length. Friedman later wrote a letter to Pinochet suggesting several economic, legal, and political reforms. People like Klein focus on the meeting which was about as a job interview and the letter while ignoring Friedman also wrote several similar letters to communist leaders like Tito as well. Maybe Friedman was a communist using her logic.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm just getting started with economics and this was one of many things on my playlist .. I'm trying to get wide spectrum of information. I have seen the Money Masters and FRB related stuff, but have so much more to see. Can you recommend some videos with anything on Keynes, Freidman, Adam Smith, Marx, Stockholm school, or Austrian school (i.e. the whole range)? I'm also intrigued by Binary Economics (Ashford, Gates, Kelso, etc). Thanks for the reply.

cochiserjs, no one school (here, capitalism) uses shock in order to further its wants - all of them do. For instance many historians believe that the burning of the Reichstag was perpetrated by the nazis themselves to make the case for war on their domestic enemies (jews, commies, etc). You mention Cuba. Are you aware of Operation Northwoods? False flag operations are a key aspect of many country's foreign policy. Not to mention the controversy with the Gulf of Tonkin incident (Vietnam prelude).

What Friedman said did not advocate creating crises. Klein complains that he used Katrina as an opportunity to implement his school vouchers system. Well what is immoral about this? If you see an opportunity to implementing a better system you should. The objection to this is prefaced by the notio
n that capitalism is inherently evil (which it isn't), when socialists do the same thing Klein does not complain, she uses them as examples of the public wanting socialism.

Of course it was born in shock...Look at how this country was founded.The British and other Europeans came in with their guns blazing and forced the market (livestock, land, ports, etc.)in their favor. This has been going on for centuries i.e. The Medieval times when these torture tactics were mastered-- during the inquisition, by usurpers, noblemen, Religious men and of course the Kings and Queens (rulers) of long ago. This video is so unconvincing. You can take any set of events and match them to make a pattern. But more importantly here - if she is right - what is her real point? Why is capitalism so bad when compared to the alternatives? Don't get me wrong, by most standards I'm a liberal (the movement that pioneered the free market), but this is just pointless journalism, tying together ideas for the sake of it.

I just finished the book today. There's no arguing the facts of the book. It's all about how Chicago School economists developed methods of going into vulnerable countries and forcing them to adopt free market policies which caused the countries to privatize all of their assets and abolish labor laws which caused mass poverty and chaos in all the countries. All of it is documented history.
