Who'll Stop The Rain
Cosmo's Factory
Lyrics: Long as I remember The rain been comin' down. Clouds of myst'ry pourin' Confusion on the ground. Good men through the ages, Tried to find the sun; And I wonder, still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain. I went down Virginia, Seekin' shelter from the storm. Caught up in the fable, I wa
tched the tower grow. Five year plans and new deals, Wrapped in golden chains. And I wonder, still I wonder Who'll stop the rain. Heard the singers playin', How we cheered for more. The crowd had rushed together, Tryin' to keep warm. Still the rain kept pourin', Fallin' on my ears. And I wonde
r, still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.

Beautiful song, ... ( 6 days ago by jrlg1181)
Beautiful song, that became the theme song on documentaries about hurricane Camille passing through Virginia in 1969. Where she put down 30 to 40 inches of rain in about 7 hours that August night just south of Charlottesville in Nelson County. The county was totally destroyed, the mountains started to come down in huge slides, mountain rivers came up as much as 45 feet, whole families were swept away, some that have never been found, final death toll in Nelson was near 150. God rest their souls

Are you speaking with great Credence, sff222? Were you present 39 years ago today when Fogarty and CCR went on the stage at Woodstock following the Grateful Dead? The theme is clearly an accusation of Washington and politics in the wake of Vietnam (five year plans and new deals wrapped in golden chains), but the rain was rain. THere was a lot of mud too.

he means it was not literally about rain... I think he is quite right...

I agree in part... the lyrics are obviously allegorical. I've seen suppositions that the 'rain' refers to the rain of napalm bombs dropped by US forces in Vietnam, or in other cases to the rain of rhetoric from politicians. I won't argue with either... part of any song's poetry is personal interpretation by the listener, and Fogerty himself has said the song was about Washington.
calderism: My issue ... ( 3 days ago by odysseusatlarge)
calderism: My issue with sff222's post was that the song "ISN'T actually about rain". I'm thinking of the danger Mark Twain warned against in the preface to his highly allegorical Huckleberry Finn, warning readers not to look for a motive, moral or plot. Twain's point was that his book is ALSO an enjoyable story. Fogerty said he was inspired by the rain and mud of his experience at Woodstock. So the 'rain' IS actually rain. But I'm not arguing that it can also be more in the listener's mind.
I have argued the ... ( 3 days ago by calderism)
I have argued the same point about Bob Dylan songs, forgive me... I was just writing it to write it...
Stating with ... ( 3 days ago by odysseusatlarge)
Stating with authority that a song has a specific meaning that the writer never acknowledged is pretentious. The rain COULD be many things, and Fogerty has said the song is about Washington and the rain at Woodstock, nothing more. If I were to guess what was in his mind I'd posit the rain might have been the torrent of bad news in the world and his life at that time, including Vietnam, JFK/MLK/RFK, the band's probs, problems with Fantasy, etc. But I don't have the audacity to say I KNOW.
oops... calderism, ... ( 3 days ago by odysseusatlarge)
oops... calderism, I replied to my own post to pose my own interpretation and didn't see your post before I did. Sounds like we are on the same page. I probably wasn't detailed enough in my point when I wrote to sff222.
