I grew up in Cleveland and was 13 when she went down. Given the connection to NE Ohio, the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald has always been special to me. This morning in Mass it was cold, grey and rainy and I instinctively started singing the song to my kids. We went to You Tube so I could show them the story. Needless to say I was blown away that this was actually the anniversary. How strange!

I think you should send a copy of your video to the Edmund Fitzgerald Museum in Whitefish Point Michigan. I am sure the many visitors would love to see it played in the lobby

As I mentioned in another post on the same subject, I was born in 81, so I heard this song off and on growing up and up until a week ago, I didn't know it was based on an actual event.

Thanks for posting these wonderful comments! My grandfather Robert C. Raferty (the cook) died on the Fitz. Comments from some of you are truely heart warming. Although I was only 4 at the time, I vividly remember waving to him as he was standing on the Fitz in his white uniform. He looked so tiny from where I was standing. I also remember the emmence size of the ship, just huge! My mom told me that I was actually on the Fitz! Thank you so much jmackoregon for posting the video.

I remember reading somewhere that The Great Lakes have experienced alot of unexplained missing ships - kinda like the Bermuda Triangle -anyone else heard of this theory? I live in Maine right now and lost alot of friends at sea - mostly commercial fishermen - and they were all very familiar with rogue waves etc. God Bless their families and friends to this day and thank you Gordon Lightfoot for the greatest tribute song ever!

I grew up on the north shore of Lake Superior and it the storms are incredible. The saying that Gitche Gumee "never gives up her dead" is true. Our Guide troop would camp near the area where the Fitzgerald sank (Pancake Bay).
Lake Huron's North Channel is known as Shipwreck Alley. I have seen one of the wrecks in shallow water when I was at camp in the 80s. It was freaky.
Sorry to hear about your friends who have been lost at sea. I've summered in Maine and it's beautiful there. God Bless.

I was on lake erie yrs ago in a 16ft fishing boat,when we left it was flat like glass 5 hrs later the wind picked up and we were miles out ,12-20 ft waves ,the front of the boat seemed to want to dive into the on comming waves but it would pop up,we reached close to shore and took the shore line back,still not sure if that was the right move but im here today to tell my story.
