upgrade whenever you want... by the time you get something, another new card will come out... but really, your only choices right now are the 4870, 9800 GX2, or the GTX 280.. the 8800 GTX plays any game on the market perfectly... no point to upgrade

8800GTX still has a lot of life in it but if you are going for an upgrade go for a GTX series not a 9 series because those are pretty much the card you have now.
