if you push the physis butten, not the particels butten. then you will see the little body butten :)

you have to hit the tab button to go into edit mode, then you press W and click subdivide.

you can also just use the "Cloth" button. You have a bit more control with this, but if you just want a basic cloth effect, Cloth works very well.
