Whenever I hear this song or it comes up in conversation someone always says something jokingly about drugs. I courteously correct them and ask them to really listen to it. It is ignorant to say this song is about drugs. This is a song about the sacrifice every parent and every friend must make when age changes a person.

honestly. it depends on how you look at the song. its clearly a toss up between the two. and they way you look at it. cause to me i see it as more or less a young boy growing up and puff being in his thoughts/mind fades away. or you could say it sounds like a man talking about getting high and then when he looses his high the dragon goes away. just depends on how you look at it.

It is easy to turn so many innocent songs and words inside the song into references to drugs. Its even happened happened to the national anthem. And the reason the drug theory has so much credence, is because so many people have hidden messages in their songs and many of them came out around in the 1960's, when PPM were playing. I think its ignorant and immature to say such an innocent song has such a dark double meaning.

"Puff the magic dragon" = Smoke weed. Jackie Paper is a poor boy who is abusing drugs. "One day it happened, jackie came no more" = Jackie managed to quit the drugs. So it has a happy ending after all.
