Video Description:
Welcome again. Today you
´ll meet the fabulous and unforgotten Marlene Dietrich singing one of the world´s best known anti-war-songs: "Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind" (internationally known as "Where have all the flowers gone". The original version of this song was written in the late fifties by American writer Pete Seeger,
based on a Ukrainian traditional. The melody was inspired by a folk song named "Drill Ye Tarriers", which has been written in 1888 by Thomas F. Casey. The German text was written by Max Colpet. Marlene Dietrich recorded this song as the very first German performer in 1962 - and that´s the record
ing you can hear now. She also sang it in French and English and made the world listen to it before many, many singers adopted it and released their own interpretation. Pete Seeger honoured May Colpet in an interview by saying that his text was even more impressive and could be sung much better tha
n his original lyrics. You may find more on the history and the lyrics here: http://www.prato.linux.it/~lmasetti/antiwarsongs/canzone.php?id=2 Marlene Dietrich was an admirable peace activist. Let´s hold her deeds in veneration and learn from the mistakes that former generations have already mad
