Leonard Bernstein performs Beethoven's Ode to Joy

Video Description:
Leonard Bernstein with the Vienna Philharmonic performs Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Notice how dramatic his conducting is; it's pretty funny. Because of Youtube limitations, I split this piece up into 3 sections. This is Part 1/3. I highly recommend sticking around for the choral reprise of the first verse in Part 2/3 and the prestissimo finale in Part 3/3.
Soloists are Gwyneth Jones, Shirley Verrett, Placido Domingo, and Martti Talvela. This first video clip is divided into the following sections: 0:00-3:36 Bernstein's introduction 1:27-2:15 The Ode to Joy played solemnly by Cello and Contrabass 2:15-3:04 A lighter, sweeter variation now including
Viola and Bassoon 3:04-3:51 Larger, more expressive second variation with addition of 1st and 2nd Violins 3:52-4:38 Triumphant and majestic third variation utilizing entire orchestra. Instruments added: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, contrabassoon, cornet, trombone, and timpani 4:39-5:31 Dizzying flight of
passion including the brief introduction of a blithe tune that is almost immediately interrupted by a thunderous cadence 5:33-6:30 The bass introduces the chorus to the audience 6:30-9:17 The Ode to Joy theme is now replayed with the significant inclusion of the chorus singing Schiller's poem. Ge

Beethoven arrived ... ( 2 weeks ago by goviegrl22)
Beethoven arrived in Vienna around the age of 18 and met Mozart. He actually performed for Mozart and is said to have had lessons from him. Mozart died about five years later in 1791. The 9th was revolutionary because it was the first time chorus was included with an orchestra. Beethoven also introduced the four part symphony form which is still the standard in the modern period. And the 9th is generally considered early Romantic, not Classical, for those who know anything about musical periods.

Govie, your wrong, if you studied musical his tory well enough, you would know that it is not know for certain whether Beethoven actually met Mozart. That is what everyone thinks. But you are wrong. And by the way,Beethoven arrived in Vienna when he was 17.You have it all wrong, I was just trying to make this clear to Beethoven fans.

he overcame them in a musical standpoint for sure, and is definitely one of the greatest composers ever (one of my profs says bach, beethoven, ellington are the top three). however, few people loved the man....anyone now saying "the greatest man who ever lived" never had to sit next to him on a bus (one of the characterizations a professor of mine gave of him). yes, great person, overcame adversity...but you could say the same of miles davis...of whom was said "i'll never love him"

duke wrote *a lot* more than just jazz ya know....not that jazz is "lesser" music at all. he's one of the composers who crossed more genres than anyone else. he continued composing until the day he died, so he wrote music at least as long as beethoven and bach did (probably longer). i'm not the expert on him though, so i can't defend him fully. just know that this professor i mentioned is likely the most knowledgeable and well-rounded musician i've ever met...he'd know who to idolize
