Coes father trained him since elentary school. his fater Peter Coe had to prodict the future of what would be the world record in the future ,and trained him to run it. S Coe only ran a 51.7 400 his senior year in high school, his dad had to work his ass off. my first year of track in 9th grade I ran the 440 yards on dirt in 51.7 ,more natural ability than Coe had but I pulled a muscle before state.I caught dede cooper in the relay like he was standing still (45.5)leg

sorry my friend. Coe broke the world record here but in what race? One with a pacesetter for him. Admittedly he probably didn't need the pacesetter there but the Coe vs Ovett races at major championships in the 80's are much better races than this albeit not as fast.

i said greatest 800m, not greatest race. for it to be great, it has to be a WR. this is. and it has to stand for a long time. this did. and he did all by himself.

no, coe is the greatest. el g's official 800m pr is 1:47.18. granted, he was capable of running a faster official 800m, but he didn't.
Agree with jmholber ... ( 2 weeks ago by deano27671)
Agree with jmholber! This run was more amazing than Kipketer's subsequent records for several reasons. 1) It was done on June 10th, before Coe would want to be at a peak, not the end of August; 2) He ran the entire last lap alone, more than 30m infront of the rest, unlike Kip, who had several guys pushing him up to 600m; 3) The tracks have got faster since then. Had he had some opposition in a race later in the season he would have run under 1:41.

Who knows how much faster Coe could have run had he not been struck with illness the next 2 seasons!? EL G could have run 1:43 max had he focussed on the event for a season.

Not sure what you mean by senior year in high school? I presume you mean 16, which is when he ran 51.8 for a 400m. You have to remember at that time he was mainly a 3000m runner, having won the English Schools at that distance. His father had yet to work on his basic speed and hadn't even decide that the 800m was to be his event at that stage. I'm not sure there are many out there with more natural ability than Coe, who could run 45 mins for 10 miles (training in '79) and 45.5 for a 400m relay?

Hey I love Coe, my favorite all time Olympian, Im just stateing the fact that my 51.7 9th, 49.5 10th 47.6 11th and 12th grade45.9 run and realy leg(45.5)if I had coes father i could have run 1.40.7. thats ok..im happy with winning the La decathalon with 7,659 points without a coach and a last place pole vault. I sucked at the vault, you cant wing that event
Hi! I'm sorry, I ... ( 2 weeks ago by deano27671)
Hi! I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to devalue your running at all! I presume 12th grade is about 17? If so, 45.9 is incredible! Faster than Coe at that age. I was just making the point that he was a late developer & by time he was 22, was able to run 10 miles in 45 min & beat Coghlan over 4 miles. You might have been able to run 1:41 with your speed, but unless you had similar endurance to Coe, it would be very unlikely, even if his father were your coach! I thought Daley won the decathlon in LA?

No ,it wasnt the Olympic decathlon,i was a touring musician at the time, and ran on the side to keep in shape. I enterd a few meets here and there. I wasnt a good enough vaulter to do the Olympic decathlon , 10.4 , 45.9, 14.8hh , lj -24'10 1500 4.17.8 hj- 6'1 those were my good events.

Wow! You were bloody good! Why didn't you get yourself a coach and pursue it more!? Your 1500m and 400m pb's are better than Daley's. :0)

the runner that has the most natural ability ive ever seen was a guy named Scott Ruvolo, he goes by scott brooklyn now,on his regular myspace photos he has a picture of himself beating James Stanford USC greatest all time sprinter.the day I ran my fastest 45.9 i took 2nd to this guy that never came to practice, would eat junk, never used blocks, and would run with no spikes. and had a bad pronation problem.his time was i think 45.4, he also ran a 20.4 and a 9.9 but pulled a muscle before fame

Just makes you think how many people out there could have been legends if they had the application. It makes me cross in a way that someone so talented didn't make the most of what he was given! I would have had the self discipline, but never had the talent. I know of James Stanford; how old was this Ruvolo when doing these times?

No, Kipketer didn't break it until '97, some 16 years after this run. All told, Coe held the record from '79 to '97, over 18 years! The longest time anyone has held the 800m record.
