George De Fretes And The Tielman Brothers - Marcella Wahini / On The Beach Of Waikiki (Live 1966)
Grandmaster George De Fretes on stage together with the almighty Indorockin' Tielman Brothers putting down an incredible live performance of the song Marcella Wahini. Legendary steelguitarist George De Fretes was born December 23rd, 1921 in Bandoeng (Bandung) - Indonesia (Dutch Indies) as son of
KNIL army soldier Anton Balthasar De Fretes and Carolina Tersamas. As a kid he used to listen to the radio whenever his favourite Hawaiian artist Sol Hoopi would be on. At age 16 George forms his own group the Royal Hawaiian Quintet with his brother Arie De Fretes and together they would win their f
irst contest in 1937 with George's own composition Royal Hawaiian Hula. Another contest was won in Soerabaja (Surabaya) -- Indonesia (Netherlands Indies), spring 1938, honoring the band as Champions Of The Archipel. At this point the band had already changed their name into the Royal Hawaiian Minstr
els. The Royal Hawaiian Minstrel would soon become the most wanted and best paid band in the whole of Indonesia (Netherlands Indies). During the World War II the occupating Japs didn't allow Hawaiian music being played since to them it was the music of the enemy (USA), so the band was forced to chan
ge their name. They adopted the name Suara Istana (voice of the palace) and started succesfully playing traditional Krontjong (Keroncong) music. After the war the band changed their name back to the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels and became more populair than ever. The band was sometimes even split in tw
o in order to play two different places at the same time! Unfortunately the radical changed social and political situation towards Dutch Indo's and Amboinese people in Indonesia forced George De Fretes to go to Holland -- Europe in 1958. While still on board of the ship Johan Van Oldebarneveldt, Geo
rge got a telegram from Phonogram producer Jan De Winter who instantly wanted to sign him as Phonogram's exclusive recording artist. The deal was closed upon arrival and this was the start of the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels European career. Their Hawaiian shows were famous and the audience absolutely l
oved it when George played complex songs such as Tickling The Strings blindfolded as if it really wasn't that big of a deal. Perhaps it really wasn't that big of a deal for him, just like playing multiple instruments such diverse as the violin, drums, saxophone, trumpet, banjo and guitar wasn't that
big of a deal for this true musical genius. Besides Hawaiian and Krontjong (Keroncong) music, George De Fretes also loved to play with various now legendary Indorock bands such as the Black Dynamites and the Black Magic. Just another prove that his versatile playing style could fit any form of musi
c. In 1966 he even did an extended tour through Germany, Switserland and Scandinavia with the almighty Indorockin' Tielman Brothers. After recording an album with Frank Valdor's German orchestra he moved to the United States. November 19th, 1981 George De Fretes died in Los Angeles of a heart attack
and left his family and many fans around the world heartbroken. As a last token of respect George De Fretes was buried next to his idol, friend and fellow Hawaiian steelguitarist Sol Hoopi. Over the years George De Fretes recorded over 60 albums and his original style of playing set the standard fo
r all steelguitarists. Although he was of vital importance for his orchestra the passing of George De Fretes did not mean the end to the story of the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels. With brother Peter De Fretes on steelguitar now together with other family members John De Fretes, Roy De Fretes and Wanda D
e Fretes the sound of the original Royal Hawaiian Minstrels was kept alive during the 1980's and 1990's. However June 15th, 2005 Peter De Fretes died an unexpected death and sadly with him also died the original De Fretes steelguitar sound. A highly original sound that forever will remain beyond com
pare.
