The concept of this song has some truth in it. In the sixties it was probably a lot easier to make a song like this. Nowadays Americans objecting to war are called 'traitors' or 'cowards'- when standing up to the military mentality takes courage. However it implies that all combatants are organised set-armies. Most of todays conflicts involve the likes of the Taliban and in Central Africa the Interhamwe militias. The idea sounds right but its not as black and white as that. cont...

cont... it is incredibly naive to believe that if western armies simply disbanded the jihadists would simply lay down their arms and say 'lets all shake hands'- no, they would use it as an oppertunity to attack us in a nightmare scenario. They are hellbent on world domination. There needs to be dialogue between the military and its critics. One side calls the others 'cowards', the other side replies with 'killers'. How is this helping anyone? The Islamists must love these internal divisions.

America would help Israel in a heartbeat, add AUS, NZ, UK + Others to this and you have a fair fight. I can see this happening in the future, and especially if you are believe the bible. (Not that I do.) Also with the bombs and WMD of today, Numbers really don't count for much. Anyway... Israel has one of the biggest Armies in the world because a higher percentage of Pop' is in them.

phil ochs was truly an amazing song writer but I believe that this was written and originally recorded by buffy sainte-marie. but that is beside the point... So many of phil ochs songs are applicable today. Things don't seem to have changed much. Great video. Great song. nicely done.
