Amazing how the legend of this show seems to grow over time. It was only good for 10th place at the 1992 DCI Finals. Yet, this performance was voted by fans into the DCI Classic Countdown as one of top ten of ALL TIME. I saw them earlier that season, and VK drew by far the loudest ovation (even if BD and SCV placed higher on the judges' cards). VK was all about the audience, not the judges or the rankings. The current state of drumcorps only grows VK's reputation as time goes on.

Yup, that was bright fluorescent yellow paint on the drums. Just VK being VK. Neon colors were still in at the time, and the video doesn't do justice to how loud those drums looked in person! The pit uniforms were jumpsuits like those worn by airport runway crews. I recall at an earlier show that season, the drum major conducted with those lighted batons used by runway traffic controllers. I read that he wore those baggy pants at finals because he lost his jumpsuit.

Wasn't '93 the Kartoon Klassics show?!? The only song they repeated was Hungarian Rhapsody. I hardly consider that a re-hash of the '92 show...

I wish it would bring back the 'bugle' part of of Drum AND Bugle Corps. *sigh* ... Going to the Atlanta Show, but it may the last time I go to a DCI event. The passion for me has gone. It remains with the 80's and 90's, and even the70's to some extent.

They most certainly DID belong! I went to Quarters, Semis, and Finals that year and loved the show each time (including the shark brought out just for Finals). Live, VK was even better, of course. There were so many fun and funny things going on that the cameras missed. It was great. What they lacked in precision, they more than made up for in G.E. It was the only time in my life I've been in a crowd that spontaneously and unanimously jumped to their feet roaring with applause and laughter. A+!

Yep, and a spontaneous, well-deserved one at that. Not one of those few people stand here-few people stand there-everbody else stand in order to stretch types, either. When the shark came out, it was all over. I really felt swept up by the crowd as we leapt to our feet as one. It was probably the best experience I've had as an audience member. Thanks, VK. 2COOL!

Clownish was the whole point! As Steve Rondinero used to say, VK were the Clown Princes of Drum Corps. :) They had a great time entertaining the fans and if the judges liked it, then FAR OUT!

I agree with your overall sentiment in response to Cavalier250. As a side note, they did have Pyware back then. "Fancy drill writing stuff" is around for convenience, but is not necessary to make a great show. Money doesn't buy intonation or marching skills. It's hard work, time, and a heck of a lot of creativity that produces great results.

You have just made me extremely happy.
