I just ordered my self a zippo lighter and i am just wondering how do you know when you need a new wick? Also is there extra wick in the lighter you can just pull through when the top bit needs changing?

it won't hurt unless u leave ur fingers in the flame or u lit it for too long and the metal got hot and u touched it

yeah theres extra wick in the lighter. theres a mechanism in the lighter that pushes out atiny bit of wick each time you open the lid, but every now and then you might have to pull some more wick through and cut the black bit off the end so it burns better. you will know when you need a new wick when you pull more through and it comes out. but i have had the same wick for well over a year. they last for ages but they are easy to replace anyway. hope that helps

Ok, thanks for your help there is one other thing though. From pushing the wick over to do the twilight zone trick then pushing it back to use it normally, the wick has frayed alot is it ok to leave it like this? Or should i pull some more out and cut the frayed bit off?

that should be fine. just as long as it still lights up for you, if not then pull some more through and cut the frayed bit
