Maya Plisetskaya was born in Moscow in 1925. She studied at the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet School. Became a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet as soon as she joined it in 1943 and prima ballerina in 1962. After being excluded for political reasons many years from tours to the West, she was finally in 1959 allowed to join the American tour with the Bolshoi. She had great success in America. Since then she danced widely outside Russia and was guest artist at the Paris Opera Ballet in 1961 and 1964. She is Prima Ballerina Assoluta.
Plisetskaya's first work as a choreographer was a ballet based on Tolstoy's Anna Karenina using music composed by her husband, the conductor Rodion Schedrin; it was staged in 1972 and filmed in 1974. Awards: She is Prima Ballerina Assoluta. People's Artist of Russia in 1959. Lenin Prize in 1964.

на Каренина" Щедрина) и др. В танце П. сочетает лучшие традиции русской хореографической культуры и новаторские устремления советских хореографов. В 1972 совместно с
И. И. Рыженко и В. В. Смирновым-Головановым поставила балет "Анна Каренина" (по Л. Н. Толстому) в Большом театре. Гастролировала в США, Великобритании, Франции, Италии, К
анаде и других странах. Ленинская премия (1964). Награждена орденом Ленина и медалями.

| i'm sorry... than how come none of us ever heard of you? we've all heard of Maya... oh yeah it's because Maya Plisetskaya is one of the most famous ballerina's ever and you(who claims to be able to do better) aren't. Now i've never seen you dance but i'm guessing you're not better. Russian and Paris Ballet eats places like CCYB for breakfast. |

| best version EVER!!!!! I find it sad that nowadays some people don't get that this, is whats important and makes ballet. ARTISTRY!!! techinqual ability is boring and nothing without it. Maya represents what ballet is all about!! people can have amazing extention and turns but who'd want to watch a Mad Scene from Gisele with a blank face? Maya also unlike many ballerinas dies not as herself but she dies as the swan. beautiful. |

| before anyone critizes this I want you to stop &realize that it is about a Swan DYING!!!it's not going to be ALL PRETTY AND TECHNIQUALLY PERFECT!!!the swan is struggling for her life not "i'm dying, oh wait let me do this perfect arabesque, ok back to i'm dying" Maya portrays how a swan would truely die. when she sees her death in front of her she starts to shake from fear and when she reaches up one more time before she dies as a final attempt to hold on to life are RAW AND REAL! |

Plisetskaya pours every bit of emotion into the dying swan; it's beyond technique, but a protest against the death of an artist. At 1:41 she stops in a pose that anybody else would need a partner to support, but it's just a passing thought for her. She seems to become the liquid that finally takes her away. |
