He wasn't being nationalistic, he just believes in the foundations of the US that are being ignored now, and he has a passion to bring it back. On the other hand, much of the US population could probably be considered nationalists, and I doubt 10% of them know it. The US isn't in good shape, and a bright future doesn't look very likely.
