Unique performance of Steve Reich - 1 musician on 2 pianos

Video Description:
Peter Aidu plays Steve Reich's "Piano Phase" with an absolutely unique technique: with a left hand on one instrument and the right hand on the second piano - he alone performs the score for two pianists

Simply Beautiful. Now if one marimbist was able to play both parts of Nagoya Marimbas, THAT would be something to talk about.

i bet like in the middle he had an out of body experience and his hands just went automatically cuz there's no way you can pay attention to both hands and think about what your doing...he really pulled it off though and i am absolutely stunned!!!

yeah, I tried it on the harpsichord, and you actually lose balance, I think it's because the brainhalf where spacial perception lies is stimulated in an arbitrary way...I just usually try concentrating on my left hand and that's it, you close your eyes, the music creates itself autonomically and you it creates effects like binaural beats, only way more awesome

That would be absolutely AMAZING. I just started to play Marimba last year, and I love playing it.

See, I would love to listen to this for enjoyment, but a lot of people don't like to not have lyrics, or a full band behind the music, but I do. And I like listening to very percussive music with no lyrics, like Glenn Kotche.

I really envy Aidu, because by memorizing this piece and playing it solo he seems to have internalized the idea of phasing, in a way that the rest of us could never hope to understand. (I would imagine that he has accomplished it by reading the phases "vertically" while we ordinarily listen to them "horizontally".)

Every Reich's project is outstanding but this one...I simply bow to him

wait, I can phase, too, although lately I've gotten a little frustrated with it :( I'm just too concentrated at times so I realize there are these off-beat notes which are supposed to be there but my brain immediately realligns them so it's really important not. to. think when you do some crazy shit like this. Apart from that, I think it's quite easy. I mean I haven't played piano on a regular basis for very long by now but still I can do this on the harpsichord.
schmetterlink, ... ( 3 weeks ago by W4d5Y)
schmetterlink, there isn't any real memorization involved in this. It's the mere repition of one line which creates these wonderful tunes, but in fact it's all basically the same line, it's just the maths that allow such music to take place.

I know, thats why i study advanced maths on uni...music is simply mathematic(espescially Fourier series if we are talking about repating sound patterns)

i got into steve reich fairly recently and this piece just blew me away. is it really just two different parts that repeat at slightly different tempos so they come together to make different melodies? or do i completely miss the point :p

Yerp he plays two identical lines but in various tempos so he can control whole melody(he slightly speeds up at the beggining, then slows down in mid)

I dont know why but this performance reminds me Pi (the movie):look on Aidu face on performance and Sean Gullette whilst he was discovering nature of math-they both were tryin to find harmony in chaos...Anyway simply ignore this if you don't feel it,maybe i'm bit tired ;)

Sorry, but this is ... ( 2 weeks ago by ckocher)
Sorry, but this is not the original intent of the piece. Amazing, but... The player pretty much jumps from one phase to the next, rather than gradually moving out of sync over several iterations of the pattern. There is one intermediate 'dovetail' of the rhythm but not a true phasing.

are you talking about around 0:55? because that's an edit of the video, it jumps ahead there.
