First, the reply ... ( 4 months ago by sympatheticdice)
First, the reply had absolutely nothing to do with Ginger Baker, it was comparing Kaith Moon to Akira Jimbo. Second, Moon didn't rip anything off Ginger Baker because their styles are absolutely nothing alike (truth be told Baker would kick Moon into the street everyday of the week). But, and this is pretty clear in my comment which you took out of context, Keith Moon did change how the drummer participates in the band. Sure Ginger outplayed Keith, but the flare isn't even in the same world.

How did Keith Moon change the way a drummer participates in a band then?
Well, the idea of ... ( 4 months ago by sympatheticdice)
Well, the idea of superstar drummers began in thw Swing Era with Gene Krupa and grew to include such greats as Buddy Rich and Max Roach. Drummers have never been bigger, there were sold out shows where drummers would walk on and play for an hour or two without accompaniment. This didn't continue into the Rock Era as greats Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts basically just kept time. Keith Moon, followed by others, with his fast, cocky, and loud playing brought drummers back into the foreground.
But that's what I ... ( 4 months ago by Sunderlanding)
But that's what I was saying. Ginger Baker was doing that well before Keith Moon. Toad (Ginger's durm solo) was a fan favourite at cream shows. Keith Moon didn't start playing this way until after he listened to Ginger's playing.
Not true, Keith ... ( 4 months ago by sympatheticdice)
Not true, Keith Moon had always been persistently pushy with his playing, he wasn't influenced to go into the foreground by Ginger Baker. If anybody he was influenced by the octapolus fills of the legendary Hal Blaine who dominated the same genre that The Who's early songs fall into.
That's just because ... ( 4 months ago by Sunderlanding)
That's just because he was stoned all the time. The point is there were drummers doing a better job of what you claim Keith Moon started before he even came along. I don't see him started anything, except maybe a new way to overdose.

Its harder to see with a knowledge of the rock era, but ask the average person who the drummer is for Cream or the Stones and they'll probably give you a blank stare. They are, however, more likely to associate Keith Moon with The Who because he led the rock drumming revolution (again, they weren't better than other drummers, but they were far more avant-garde). Also, many drummers, including soft players like Ringo and Dennis Wilson were always stoned, it didn't make their playing obnoxious.
Just because the ... ( 4 months ago by Sunderlanding)
Just because the average asshole knows who he his doens't mean he influed drumming. All that means is he influenced average assholes. More drummers who followed this generation would site Ginger Baker as an influence.

5 years ago, my parents were out on a date. i was alone. a man rang my bell and forced his way in and stabbed me to death. he also shot me and decapitated me. if you dont copy and paste this to 5 music videos, ill come back at midnight and mutilate you the same way i was mutilated.

I have to add - Ginger Baker was the "star" drummer. I saw Ginger Baker and Buddy Rich duel it out in Central Park, New York City. Best show of drumming I have ever seen. Keith Moon doesn't stack up to either of them.
Also, I'm sorry but this Akira Jimbo is just OKAY. He doesn't come close to the artistry and syncopation that Ginger Baker had on "Sunshine of your Love" with Cream. Those three artists came together at a critical time in rock history.

The Who were "showmen" but rock history will always include Cream.
It's not how many symbols you can crash or how fast. It's how you interpret the song and add that artistry. I don't particularly like this rendition of the song. No real dynamics to it. Heck, Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad sounds better than this guy!

It's cool! Electronic music is okay.
My feeling is a drummer should hone his drumming skills. More energy in to drumming and less in to the distractions. I lived for those concerts where the drummers had their 10-15 minute solo and honed their artistry and skill. Just amazing! On a positive note, a friend of mine is a drummer and
he says "I wish I had chosen another instrument".

A bass player gets called for gigs, a singer as well and even some guitarists but almost never do drummers get called.
So, maybe a drummer has to do something different.

I think you're talking absolute shit. Drummers get called more than almost anyone else in my experience, because they're 'back line' instrumentalists. A good guitarist or pianist or whatever is the 'front man' of the band, and therefore the band is 'theirs'. They book whichever drummer they feel makes them sound best.

have to agree ....ginger's use of african rhythm s and blues and jazz nuances in what was ostensibly a blues rock band was way cool ...speaking of blank stares ask a drummer what was unique about moon's style or technique ...he didn't push out any envelopes ......leading the rock drumming revolution.... that made me bust out laughing ...no, that was just him running for the crapper
Keith Moon was ... ( 1 month ago by drummer78)
Keith Moon was actually very important to rock drumming. My Generation, Anyway, Anywhere, Anyhow and The Kid Are Alright are all classic rock drum tracks. He was a a volcanic drummer for that time. In 1965 when The Who broke out most rock drummers were fairly conventional in their style and approach. Keith Moon may not have had tons of schooled technique but his playing was over the top and defined a type of rock drumming. Ginger was great too and a revolutionary of rock drumming too.

You're talking out of your ass, drummers a probably the most important part of a band. I myself am one, and I'm usually first picked for musicals and whenever there's a musical event at school, not to mention many of my friends have asked me to be drummer in their bands.

Dude, you're spot on. I'm a guitar player and in a band situation a great drummer makes me a better guitar player. The smartest thing I ever did after playing guitar for fourteen years was to take a years worth of private drum lessons just so I could understand music better. I even went so far to join a working band as a drummer for six months. You will not find a guitar player who appreciates what a drummer brings to a band more than me. Give me a good drummer and I'll be fine! Keep on rockin'
