Out of the 8 PiL albums...
2 masterpieces (First Issue, Metal Box) 2 great albums (Flowers of Romance, Album) The other 4 albums are embarassingly weak. As much as I admire John Lydon, his career with PiL was certainly hit-or-miss.

Got to agree with MastaBlasta (though I would put 'Flowers...' as a masterpiece too) For me, the main message of "punk" (hate that word but it's the one we use)was to challenge & question everything before one accepted or disregarded it. PiL did this musically on their early albums & it's a pity Lydon had to give in to FM radio play later on, but as he said himself, he has bills to pay like the rest of us. Are there any bands challenging the norm these days? I hope so. Do tell, I'm out of touch!

Love the song, love the album. It's one of the uncommercial albums I own but maintains some kind of musical cohesion and is an absolute classic for it (unlike, for example, Metal Machine Music)

I think they're okay...but Rise is defintely the best. We cleaned the entire house once and I just had it on repeat. I don't know - I just haven't gotten around to actually listening to the others. But this is pretty...odd...but it's a good thing in account that it IS Johnny Lydon. (lol)

Oh no - back in the day there were a number of TOTP appearances. They were a chart act, with hits! Watching them perform Death Disco on TOTP (available to view here on YouTube), it's astonishing now to think that anything so uncompromising actually was a Top 20 single. Mainstream culture has, in many ways, become a lot more conservative.

The Flowers of Romance album is one of the most underrated masterpieces ever recorded!
