It was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays - it is Hays' voice you hear explaining the song's composition. Seeger and Hays were two of the four Weavers, the grandparents of all acoustic folk groups, the first to have acoustic hits ten years before the Kingston \Trio and the later PP&M. Hays died in 1981; plenty more recordings have been made of this song. PP&M's, however, remains the best known.

comparing Trini's and PPM version is apples and oranges, really......Trini's is considered more the complete classic....his voice wasnt as pure as Mary's,, but his stage persona was charismatic, and it was impossible not to move, clap and tap your feet to his version....Mary Travers does a great rich vocal....Trini has to get the nod on this.
