Incorrect. the pilots flew the engine out procedure exactly how they were trained. Simply put, the mechanical damage from the engine coming off caused the left wing to stall while the right wing did not.

Ups==but thats NOT what the comment was. The comment was "The SAFEST way to travel is by air" - star
Sorry, but that was the original statement, and its 100% correct. If you have to go from Chicago to Denver, youre more likley to survive if you fly, rather than drive. Its not rocket science.

LOL. indeed. While its TRUE that youre more likely to survive a car crash than a plane crash, THAT WASNT THE QUESTION.

id think they would try to land immediately instead of continuing with one frakin engine. they could just ease off the throttle instead of climbing to 300 ft! thats how high the worlds tallest rollercoaster dropo is! would you want to fall from that high?

Not many photos or videos unnerve me. But for some reason I get serious chills whenever I see the photo of the plane flying sideways right before it crashes. Every time I see it I think the same thing: what complete terror the passengers and crew were experiencing the second that photo was snapped. I could not even begin to imagine.

Sorry to be ... ( 1 day ago by bopeepster)
Sorry to be nitpicky, but I grew up in Elk Grove and know the area quite well. The plane didn't crash in an abandoned airfield, it was simply a vacant field. Also, it was Touhy Trailer Park, not Oasis Mobile Home Park, which is nearby on Route 83 and Interstate 90.
For weeks afterwards the smell near the crash site was horrible. I worked after school at the Burger King near the crash, at 83 and Touhy. I cried every time I went to work, the horror and sadness were inescapable.

bopeepster: Google ... ( 16 hours ago by jsmc11)
bopeepster: Google "Ravenswood Airport" and read the article "Abandoned & Little Known Airfields: Illinois, Northern Chicago area", and you will find AA191 did crash on the property of a small airport that operated back in the 1930's to early 60's. One of the old airport hangars was destroyed in the crash. By 1979 there wasn't much left of that old airfield, so it essentially was a "vacant field" as you say. Interesting article. AA191 is discussed in it.

I'm sure he was going to try, but by the time the engine fell off he was almost at the end of the runway. He would have flown back and landed except for one thing: the plane crashed.
