Telescopic Evolution - Waking Life excerpt

Uploaded by: prokofiev678
Video Description:
"If we're looking at the highlights of human development, you have to look at the evolution of the organism and then at the development of its interaction with the environment. Evolution of the organism will begin with the evolution of life perceived through the hominid coming to the evolution of mankind. Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man. Now, interestingly, what you're looking at here are three strings: biological, anthropological
— development of the cities — and cultural, which is human expression. Now, what you've seen here is the evolution of populations, not so much the evolution of individuals. And in addition, if you look at the time scales that are involved here — two billion years for life, six million years fo
r the hominid, 100,000 years for mankind as we know it — you're beginning to see the telescoping nature of the evolutionary paradigm. And then when you get to agricultural, when you get to scientific revolution and industrial revolution, you're looking at 10,000 years, 400 years, 150 years. Uou're
seeing a further telescoping of this evolutionary time. What that means is that as we go through the new evolution, it's gonna telescope to the point we should be able to see it manifest itself within our lifetime, within this generation. The new evolution stems from information, and it stems from
two types of information: digital and analog. The digital is artificial intelligence. The analog results from molecular biology, the cloning of the organism. And you knit the two together with neurobiology. Before on the old evolutionary paradigm, one would die and the other would grow and dominate.
But under the new paradigm, they would exist as a mutually supportive, noncompetitive grouping. Okay, independent from the external. And what is interesting here is that evolution now becomes an individually centered process, emanating from the needs and desires of the individual, and not an extern
al process, a passive process where the individual is just at the whim of the collective. So, you produce a neo-human, okay, with a new individuality and a new consciousness. But that's only the beginning of the evolutionary cycle because as the next cycle proceeds, the input is now this new intelli
gence. As intelligence piles on intelligence, as ability piles on ability, the speed changes. Until what? Until we reach a crescendo in a way could be imagined as an enormous instantaneous fulfillment of human, human and neo-human potential. It could be something totally different. It could be the a
mplification of the individual, the multiplication of individual existences. Parallel existences now with the individual no longer restricted by time and space. And the manifestations of this neo-human-type evolution, manifestations could be dramatically counter-intuitive. That's the interesting par
t. The old evolution is cold. It's sterile. It's efficient, okay? And its manifestations of those social adaptations. We're talking about parasitism, dominance, morality, okay? Uh, war, predation, these would be subject to de-emphasis. These will be subject to de-evolution. The new evolutionary para
digm will give us the human traits of truth, of loyalty, of justice, of freedom. These will be the manifestations of the new evolution. And that is what we would hope to see from this. That would be nice."

Spelled Kurzweil wrong. In Kurzweil's book, "The Singularity is Near," Bill Gates joins him in detailing all of the far reaching effects of this merger of humanity and total information....the REAL LIFE MATRIX, they believe, IS LESS THAN 20 YEARS AWAY.

I think you're missing the point. what I'm disagreeing with is the "evolution works only in an individual level" comment. it doesn't, because selection pressures can happen for both group AND individual.define altruism as the ability to take a momentary lose, for ultimate gain. individually, my nutrition, need to reproduce, etc. supersedes yours. but we don't have mass chaos with people stealing everything. That's because GROUPS with more altruism were more successful than othergroups selection

Evolution does NOT occur at the group level. Natural selection works ONLY on the individual. These facts mean that what this dude is talking about is complete fiction.

Hi guys!! I think its quite evident that evolution can ONLY occure on a group level!! Because where would be the advantage of being "a" many? just a mistake? NO just another little trick of evolution giving us more opportunity to interact!! Because the idea of reality defines itself in the course of interaction between at least 2 people as there is NO objective truth!! Hypothatically: How could you trust a "god" that "tells" u what is real??? ;)))
There are just two ... ( 1 month ago by drag54on)
There are just two problatic points in his idea: Is the human not part of nature? Id like to say man in is a way/form of nature.. The idea of mind is not the fact that it consists of sth, but that sth "emerges" up there in your melon-shaped skull ;))) that consistence is irrelevant but EMERGENCE as process not as steady existence leads to his idea of evolution through interaction isnt EVEN sth that he made clear to himself... ;))
You completely miss ... ( 1 month ago by jjm121)
You completely miss the point. He's referring to to the telescopic nature of evolution. The speed at which discovery is happening is growing exponentially which is where this new 'evolutionary' paradigm is created. He's not talking about physical evolution, like apes to humans....nice one.
No, I don't see ... ( 1 month ago by 1noen1)
No, I don't see where in this clip he makes the distinction between natural selection and cultural advancement. He shouldn't use the word evolution if he isn't really talking about it.

I'm starting to read up on praxeology and how society comes to be spontaneously out of man's need to go from a state of dissatisfaction to one of satisfaction. If our technological advancements eventually gives us instant satisfaction for our wants and needs, won't society cease to exist?
Satisfaction ... ( 1 month ago by rossman1rb)
Satisfaction defined one day may fade to dissatisfaction the next, so your theory would seem to still hold true but with gratification being delivered on an ever faster time scale. Right up to, but not including, instantaneously. (IMO)
Thanks! Right now, ... ( 1 month ago by Fabyfakid)
Thanks! Right now, the whole science of economics is based on the fact that there we have unlimited needs/wants and limited resources ( the most important of them all being time). So what Dr. Healy explains is very intriguing, and very relevant, to our future as a society and as a species.

It doesn't? of course it does. (allotropic speciation). there's a ton of literature on the evolutionary basis for ethics and what we refer to as "altruism". I think your confusing philosophical egotism with my point. (read hauser, de waal, or richard joyce). Where did yo get this evolution is only in individuals business? can I get references?

There is no such ... ( 1 month ago by 1noen1)
There is no such thing as "allotropic speciation". Did you mean allopatric? That is geographic speciation due to populations being physically isolated. That doesn't support your argument. I've changed my position. I believe that group selection does exist. I am still not buying his notion of telescopic evolution though.
The "neo human" ... ( 1 month ago by dRbRAINDEATh)
The "neo human" idea i think is a bit of a hit n hope rather than a prediction. Eg truth in evolution is always intertwined with successful deception.
that was the ... ( 1 month ago by Traderjoe56)
that was the original argument. physically isolated groups exist. some groups have more individuals that can postpone immediate gains for the greater good ("altruism")because these groups have stronger group cohesion, they survive, and dominate those with less cohesion. but glad you see this. telescopic evolution is an entirely different argument. But you don't need to look far to find examples. Books for example have evolved telescopically. clay tablets, to scrolls, to roman codex, etc.
