We seem to forget ... ( 6 months ago by satziebaby)
We seem to forget that Stan could play his fuckin' ass off....All that he is remembered for is his Bossa/Gilberto/Ipanema period..Yeah he made some good bread from that, but his soul was always on the "street". Jazz was his feed..Shame about the drug shit....RIP Stanley
I only saw Stan ... ( 6 months ago by pindaric)
I only saw Stan live once--the band with Airto, George Cables, etc.--mind-blowing playing. Even though people call the bossa nova stuff commerical, he could play the shit out of that stuff like no other saxophonist who ever recorded it.
Aye, people ... ( 6 months ago by Vayshen)
Aye, people underestimate the average amount of time required to get really good at music. In my humble opinion, talent can only get you so far. Alot is hard work! That said, what is the title of this DVD?

I disagree. There are a lot of great players out there today playing this well or better.
Patently false. ... ( 5 months ago by caponsacchi)
Patently false. Listen to "For Musicians Only" or "Diz and Getz." Getz could play at any speed, not only articulating each and every note but double-timing them. He often deliberately went for as few notes as possible, emulating his hero, Prez. He began to communicate with the public when he stopped being the super pyrotechnician.
the most overlooked ... ( 5 months ago by monterivero)
the most overlooked saxophonist of all time. he had absolute amazing technique but unlike all the players today who just try to move around on the horn and go outside, getz always use to pick the perfect notes for the changes. one of the cleverist players ever to play, also one of the msot beautiful tones. Listen to Night and Day by him and Baron. Beautiful

What surprises me ... ( 4 months ago by Colt45alison)
What surprises me is how people here are so critical. I saw him 3 times, once at the old Lighthouse in LA. If you canno play any better then comment to yourself.

Compared to that, I don't think I deserve to touch a piano again. Who is that pianist and what else has he emitted his awesomeness onto?

he is a melodical player. something that is really hard to do
Don't try and play ... ( 4 months ago by luisamarte2000)
Don't try and play "better" than Getz, just be yourself and enjoy playing. Little wonder jazz musicians are so weird; always trying to emulate their "Jazz Heroes" and worrying about the criticism of other jazz musicians. Get a frickin' life. It's too damn short anyway - LIFE.
Kenny Barron is the ... ( 3 months ago by TonyBurrell2)
Kenny Barron is the pianist. Looks like Billy Hart on drums, BTW

I recommend People Time. It was the last thing Getz and Barron recorded together. It's a beatiful 2-cd album.

Melodical?
Melodical??
Well I guess that would be true if he were playing harmonically in a mixolydial dominate progression of phrygian or diatonic dominate changes.

I agree with you, jerry. 'People Time' is a beautiful album. Every note seems to have been heartfelt.

Try 'melodious' or 'melodic', zeek. This is all about communication, meaning that you, as a reader, must do your part! Not all of us are native speakers of english..., but we try, you know?
