Genesis - Dukes Travels Dukes End (drums by Jouxplan)

Uploaded by: jouxplan
Video Description:
Here is my attempt at this epic couple of tracks by Genesis, from the 'Duke' album. It is by no means spot on, but you get the gist I hope. It's great fun to drum to, but quite a challenge. There is a hell of a lot going on, and lots of different changes and moods.
As usual, Phil plays a fantastic drum part. And they certainly had the drums up high in the mix on this, didn't they? Epic! It has been very difficult to get the sound mix right my video. You will note that the early sections are rather quiet on the music front - can't be helped: sorry! The ope
ning cymbal crescendo's are awkward on the timing front, especially when you can't really hear what is going on in your headphones. I bought timpani sticks especially for this video! The fade into the rolling tom part is not easy to copy 'live', obviously. And getting the timing right for hitting t
hat first crash cymbal --arrrgghhh--I often do it a bar too early or late. I think Phil may have had two seperate tracks recording two seperate tom parts here - I am not saying that because I think he 'cheated' or something - I just think it sounds a lot like there are overlays to me. I love the 6/
8 parts, with the ride bell accents, and the off beat crash hits, and Phil manages to play beautiful intricate bass drum parts throughout these sections. The snare keeps moving about too, which makes it all the better. Perfect (not me, Phil). The weird 4 stroke roll fill thing at 3'58 always seems
to mess me up - I don't know why, but I am never quite on time when I hit the crash coming out of it. I think it's 'cos Phil sneaks a five stroke roll in on the second group of 'four', but I may be barking up the wrong tree here. It's probably just me always getting this bit wrong. Between you and m
e though, I hate 4 stroke rolls.......I can't do 'em. I love the fast bass drum work from 4'45 onwards. Especially the way Phil plays the clever short fills on the snare (where he just kind of flams and lets the left hand (right in his case) bounce. Sometimes he keeps the bass going through the lon
ger fills, sometimes he don't; and sometimes using two fast cymbal hits to come out. It's just brilliant. As usual, I always stop the hi hat too bleeding early on the bit at 8'25. Partly this is because I cannot hear it properly, and partly because I am always too early..... Dukes End is just HUGE
to play. Fast bass, and as for that fill at 9'21, well, it's ok with double pedals, but Phil will only have used one, so I tried to as well. Shame the mix means it is not as coherent at it might have been - I promise you it sounds epic off camera! I am very aware that the end crescendo thing is ab
solute pants. I seriously messed it up. I guess I could have faded it out, but I figured I should be honest and let you see it! I must admit though, I think the crescendo Phil plays is very, very hard to get right. Hope you enjoy this - I certainly did! And I am damn pleased I just about managed t
o squeeze this in one video onto YouTube - in theory it is too long! :-)

I certainly know of Neal Braatz - he is one of only 3 or four drummers I subscribe to on YouTube! His rendition of both Dance on A Volcano and especially Eleventh Earl Of Mar is just extraordinary, and I love his drum sound!

Yes I couldn't agree more.
I wish Neal had covered the studio version of Dance on a Volcano as well, as there are quite many differences.Anyway you two are my fav amateur artists and I listen to you a lot at work. ^^

I would be good if it were possible to get hold of Genesis tracks minus the drums, then you could re-record them.

Well maybe but it would be brilliant to play along to tracks with only you on the drums, although without playing with actual band members keeping in time might be hard.

Thank you!
Google translates this as -
'It is a real pleasure to see the party battery of the two pieces of Genesis' No idea what 'party battery' means, but I wonder if it should say 'medley'? Merci!

Now the sound quality is fantastic.

Tuned 'em a bit, but I suspect the sound difference is more about the fact that I am in a new room - all the vids this side of Xmas are recorded in a much more 'live' sounding room (it's a conservatory).
Cheers!

you're better than I. I was born with spina bifida and can't walk so I would have to drop the kick part with the rolling tom toms because I use my floor tom as my kick sound like Roger Taylor did with the stomps on We Will Rock You
