r's comic song New Math (1965) For your information, Thomas Andrew (Tom) Lehrer (born April 9, 1928) is an American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician. He used to lecture on mathematics and musical theater. As for RonfarZ3, he is "the guy who gets all the jokes" (according to h

Who ever invented ... ( 2 weeks ago by fringefries)
Who ever invented New Math probably had good intentions but didn't consider the fact that most people are not math savantes. It's more more complicated than it's worth. I'm sure on some level it makes sense but not on the level of let's say your average inner city student.

It's a big mess. what makes 342 - 173 equals 147???? even using the new math by that 8 base
it's unlogic...

it's not pointless tho. the point of 'new math' or subtracting and adding in different bases is to show TEACHERS that math in base 10 isn't as instinctive or natural as we might think. if we'd all learned base 8 to begin with this would be obvious to us. by understanding 'new math' you understand how you can teach real math to others.. yeah? or so i've been explained.

it
´s logic: Base 10: 342 means 3*100+4*10+2*1=342 Base 8: 342 means 3*64+4*8+2*1 therefore 342(base8)=226(base10) and 173(base8)=123(base10) and 147(base8)=103(base10) 226-123=103(base10) = 342-173=147(base8) See how it works?
@dinaegypt1988 ... ( 1 week ago by l1geh)
@dinaegypt1988 342base10 = 3*100+4*10+2*1 342base8 = 3*64+4*8+2*1 = 226base10 therfore 173base8 = 123base10 147base8 = 103base10 it
´s logic and it works ;)

Not much point in assuming a calculator will not be handy. In real life (the only collection of scenarios that matter), we use all tools at our disposal.

the only problem ... ( 3 days ago by bluefootedpig)
the only problem with the video is that when he says 8 from 4, you write it as 8-4... when it is really 4-8.. its basically what you do in yoru head is take 4 from 8, which leaves 4, then do 10-4 and you get six. hence 4 from 8 is 6

It probably does, ... ( 8 hours ago by 4u5zding0)
It probably does, different education systems do not allow calculators (I'm assuming that tiagoaoa is referring to the overall thread here), students in Australia don't get to use calculators, meaning you have to understand what the processes are to some extent, rather than trying combinations of numbers and symbols in a calculator to get a correct answer.
