Again, he wanted to ... ( 1 month ago by mtheoryrules)
Again, he wanted to debate the resolution
"Education should teach a world religion course".
Further there is not valid empirical evidence to sugest that any one religions holy text has been "revealed by god" if it were so then biblical "historians" would have presented it by now surely.
It is all speculative conjecture, and should be treated as such.
The resolution ... ( 1 month ago by mtheoryrules)
The resolution should have been "religions are inventions" but that would have left denish at a horrible disadvantage so much so that there would be no debate.
Any rational person can quickly realize that religions are human inventions often attribute supernatual causes to events that have a less mystic rational explianation.

Yes, he wanted to, but that was ultimately not the topic. I get the feeling you believe you are debating me, despite the fact that I have been open that I am an atheist and believe that religions are cultural institutions. Simply because I am an atheist, however, does not mean I believe the atheist in this debate to be infallible or even wholly agreeable. Dennett has made interesting contributions to our discourse on philosophy of mind, but his argument here is weak and irrelevant.

My point is that no more did denish adress the resolution.
And that I get the impresion that dennit did simply agreed the resolution "god is an invention" because denish rejected the latter.
I do not think it is weak, The jon frum religion for example. This is an excellent example that demonstrates how religions and there concepts of god are contrived.
Do you have a better argument than dennits for the resolution?
If so lets hear it.
If not, then why bother criticizing?
I've already ... ( 1 month ago by Nikolus)
I've already explained how it does not follow that, because there are many religious traditions, none of them are actually true. In fact, many of these traditions argue just that: they are true, the others are not. I have also already explained that an appeal to factual evidence concerning ORIGINS of religious "revelations" provides a better critique of claims to authenticity and support for the idea of God as an invention. I don't really know what you're arguing, and it's prob. not important.

Good God! I almost fell out of my chair laughing when he was describing that Frum religion. I got to look into that one. I thought he was making that shit up, and if it wasn't Dennett saying it then I would think he was. Man, just goes to show you just how fucked up we can be, as humans that is. Maybe I can fly over there and be their Messiah? I think I got some old BDU's in the closet. Wish me luck!

I do completely agree with Pro. Dennett. The schools should teach all world religions with a non-biased facts-based curriculem, now if someone wants to learn strictly christianity, they should go to a private school and that's their choice, but the public schools should deffinately teach world religions, but if still be able to have Christian organizations either before or after the school hours.

I'm a Christian and I'd love to see a well-done curriculum of comparative religion taught in our schools. Most Christians are woefully ignorant of Christian scripture. That said, my hunch is that any such curriculum would be developed by atheists with a mind toward undermining faith. I saw it in college, with the, "Well, nobody *rational* really believes this stuff" statements in such classes. Since youngsters have less experience in defending themselves from such attacks, it'd be bad.

Sun worship manifests itself throughout the entire bible. The word, Amen is a reference to the Egyptian deity, Amen of Thebes, later syncretically merged to the supreme Sun-God, Amen-Ra.

The Eye of Horus is a Falcon's Eye. It represents the Sun as an Eye in the Heavans looking down on all humanity. Thus God is said to look down on all humanity.
