He means that he has heard more of Blue's hard bop-style playing than funk. I also haven't heard a lot of Blue's funk, but I definitely enjoy it.

Yeah I figured that. That's why I can't stand Jazz purists. The loudmouths that only think 3/4 time signature and Bop style all day, every day, will suffice as "Jazz". The same self righteous people that called Herbie Hancock "Pop" when he funked out. Same with Lonnie Liston, Roy Ayers, Ahmad Jamal and others. They'd rather sit there listening to some blathering improv by Mingus that sounds like cars crashing into each other, because it's "real jazz".

These are also the type of people that talked shit about Miles and went crazy when he switched vibes from time to time. They're always annoying, always myopic, always a pain in the ass, always the "expert", always cynical, always critical. Music snobs are unreal.

Never mind the jazz police, zedec. This is great and an apt tribute to the great man.

I know for a fact - because Blue told me so - that the record label wanted him to record these tunes. He LOVED beebop. However, there is no mistaking the sound of his horn, no matter WHAT he plays. (PS: I got married in his house in L.A.!!! so I knew him for years)
Wrong, Blue ...( 8 months ago by KojiRecords)
Wrong, Blue Mitchell's best album is "Bantu Village," where Blue took his horn and gave it a street vibe, that Blue Note album was unlike anything the label ever released. Thanks to "Bantu Village," Blue Note received more attention from younger demos that did not by their previous jazz product. I later found that the album was well received in Germany as well. Kudos to Blue, regardless of what style he plays, it's all good!

Your bio ignores the 9 albums blue recorded on riverside independant of the horace silver people. Blue didn't just record with adderly on riverside he recorded regularly as leader.
Big 6, out of the blue, blue soul, blue's moods are among the best work he did with or without junior cook and the silver..

Why in God's name would you come down on the "jazz purists" for not appreciating all the forms and then dis Mingus in the next sentence?

When I first started listening to jazz I was visiting NY, August of 1968, and saw that Blue Mitchell was playing at Slugs. Unfortunately I don't remember much about the music because the experience of getting to and back from Slugs was very memorable. Would anyone know who he may have been playing with at that time?

I have been listening to jazz for over 15 years, and had never previously heard Blue Mitchell, so this video and the Orin Keepnews video regarding Blue's career were really educational and entertaining for me. Thanks for posting this.

Funny you should mention SLUGS. I used to go there when I lived in N.Y.City in 1966. I'm back home in Denmark now. Anyway I knew Blue personally when I lived in L.A. My ex played with him out there. Blue's tone was exeptional. AND Blue was an exeptional guy.
