In the 1980s ... ( 4 months ago by MISHA1119)
In the 1980s Pogorelich was capable of creating both incredibly subtle nuances and electrifying virtuosity that few pianists could match. But when I heard him in 1993, he had already begun a precipitous decline. His jarring, ugly fortissimos were horrifying, and his rubatos were bizzare. Sadly, his eccentricities have only gotten worse, and he is frequently booed at concerts. At times he plays like someone who has literally gone insane. A sad fate for so great a talent.

It's quite true what you are saying. I attended one of his concerts in Italy, and I felt really sad for him. He had no energy, no emotion, it sounded like someone who wants not to live anymore. His head was completely shaved, and he used scores for all the pieces. He was fatter than here too. The tempi were very very slow. He played the longest and weirdest Fur Elise ever. However, I managed to shake his hand at the end and get an autograph.

The shaved head and scores for all the pieces is really alarming. The weight gain has been gradual but inexorable. That person who mentioned his falling part after Alice died is onto something. It was a weird relationship, but she gave him stability and
confidence, muscially and socially. This was the impression I got from being around them at
the Pogorelich Competition. I hope something happens to make him want badly to turn it all back around - he has so much to offer the music world.

I am no expert in classical music, i just like it a lot. I recently discovered this particular ballade and have listened to most of the versions on this site. This one is definitely the best version. The speed is perfect. It is a real shame if what you guys below me are saying about his decline is true, this man indeed seems like a genius.

I attended his concert yesterday and I agree with you. He IS a genius. He can play Beethoven,Brahms,Rachmaninov or whatever with no "stylistically correct" interpretations/technique of the epoch. In fact it seems to be the Pogorelich stile and epoch. This is his genius, I think, because whatever the composer is, when we hear his interpretations now, we know it is Pogorelich's mind behind instead of composer's mind. His music has all the coherence, not of the composer but of the pianist himself.

In the concert I attended I noticed that people how knew well the pieces he played appreciated and admired so much his completely unique and new structured interpretations. On the contrary, who didn't know very well those pieces, doesn't understand what he played because he putted out unexpected phrases, in the middle notes of the chords, for instance, and gave no importance to the original and structural phrases. This made the original piece almost unrecognisable: intelligence and imagination!!

Who gives a shit what his hands look like, this is about the MUSIC and if you had decent ears you'd hear it. Too bad you can't appreciate his genius.

Stunning. I've always felt there must be more to the opening section than just a charming folk song in Sicilian rhythm. This is after all a Ballade, Chopin only wrote 4 of them, and they're his most profound pieces. Pogorelich turns the opening inside out and makes clear its connection with the rest of the work. Completely astonishing for a 22-year old artist. And yet he didn't even make it to the final round of the competition?
