JoshR, Strange comment. You dislike this architectural style, thats understandable. It's not for everyone certainly. With such a long history of very modernist thinking in all areas, you can't imagine anyone appreciating it at all. Do you live in a fake colonial split level ranch? Solid design im sure.

ppl who work in a power plant can`t travel miles and miles everyday so they need to stay somewhere close to the plant dude .... its like goin on an oil platform .. u gotta stay there for the whole time ... :) fucked up but thats how it is

Contaiment buildings?! Which kind of containment building are you talking about? The ones that cover the whole power plant main building or the ones that can stand a melted down reactor explosion? I agree with you on the test things, but there isn
´t much to do against a explosion like that, considering it is happening anyway.

And jamesandrew2000, you didn't have to live in something like this, while people in Ukraine and Poland coulnd't build big houses (very small houses at least, it was more doghouse) and most of them had to live in something like this - in 10 floor building in 50 square meters apartment. Actually living in Pripyat was relativly okay (everyone wanted to live there), but buildings are... Now it makes nice socrealism museum for people from both west and east.

This is the most touching Chernobyl video/slideshow, the music sets the time to the time that was, its stunning how man can create such an oasis then fuck it all up like he usually does.

Absolutely!
Of all the pictures I have seen of Pripyat before the the disaster, there are little or no people out and about.
I think it was avery large city for the population, less than 50K.
Plus I think in their culture, at the time, people didnt just "hang out". You worked, went to school did you shopping and went home. If you had time to bum around you were just being lazy.

unfortunately i am sure the amount of radiation that was released there was many many times higher then Hiroshima in fact radiation was detected all over western europe and norther united states. today in the red forest and other location levels are still so high it could be bad real fast and no there is nothing to stop radiation only water and lead can but the ground there is contaminated for a 40 mile radius today (officially) i believe it is more
