The fact that a believer is happier than a sceptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality. Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. how could Christ have died for our sins when he didn't die at all? I still say a church steeple with a lightning rod on top shows a lack of confidence.

If belief in heaven was private, like the tooth fairy, I'd say fine. But tooth fairy supporters don't come around to your house and try to convert you. They don't try to teach your children stultifying pseudo-science in school. They don't try to prevent access to contraception. The religious won't leave us alone. These are not just private delusions, they're ones they want to inflict on other people. History teaches us that no other cause has brought more death than the word of god.

Maybe I'll prove to be crazy for believing in something that turns out to be false, but what's the harm in that? On the other hand, what if you who are so sure there is nothing beyond this life discover differently once you get there? What if you reach the end of your life only to learn that it truly *is* man's destiny to die once
then to face judgement before God? I'm willing to entertain viable alternatives, but I have to ask: if Christianity is not the answer for humanity, then what is?

How about each person takes responsibility for his/her own actions. Punishment is based on your effect on the well-being of other people. Everyone works to have the best life on earth possible, knowing that it is their only life. That way you have the morality some christians like to call their own without the hatred inherent in a religion that calls every disbeliever a heretic doomed to eternal torture.
