Can anyone tell me if there is a medium-scale 5 or 6 string bass?
Also, is it possible to use lower 4 strings of 5-string bass on a 4-string bass? so it'll be BEAD instead of EADG.

Paul Gray from Slipknot has a signature 4 string Ibanez ATK... it comes tuned to BEAD. Don't try that kind of drop tuning with normal strings. They will be too loose. You are liking metal I take it??

Thanx for your reply. I listen to all kinds and I do love metal. I was wondering about the strings b/c that's exactly how Fernandes make their "normad bass", w/built-in amp. B/c it's short-scaled(about 640mm), they use lower 4 strings of a 5-sring bass in order to get that low, heavy "bass guitar" sound. So I thought why not, w/ a regular 4-string? You're telling me that's how slipknot man tunes his BEAD, rite? Is his signature model sold that way?

Indeed his signature model is sold that way. However, it is designed for metal (which I love more than anything), it is not the most versitile intrument, funk may sound boring on it and such. I just got a BTB 675 (Ibanez like Mr Gray's) it has 5 strings and sounds good on any music I throw at it. If you can afford
£500 or you can haggle (I got mine for 400 :D), take this as a big recomendation. I find 5 strings better now I am used to them. But remember what the good chap in this vid says...
