similar design of the front, but i dont like the back, it doenst look as solid and modern and youthfull than the predesessor s40. Its like that with most car manufacturers.
Honda CRV 1st Gen looks so much solid than the 2nd Gen which looks plastiky. Same with the C-Class.
Eventhough the back looks more 'manlier' i prefer the old one. This is like the front of the S40 and the back of the old S60..

There is no such thing as a V50R or S40R. In recent years the R series has been Exclusive to the S60 and V70 models.

I own a 2005 S40 and I can safely say that this is depressing. The front air damn looks silly. The wide "u" shaped groove that goes down under the lisence plate is pointless. The side sills are far too round. The rear diffuser is also too rounded at the bottom and that groove running across the bumper is again, pointless. What's with those reflectors above the exhaust tips? The interior is pretty much the same other then the redesigned center console. Where are the cup holders?

I think that the S40/V50 is the most harmonious design of the current Volvo line-up. Not too long or wide, looks and feels sturdy. Therefore any modification will be a problem for those who considered the original design the same way. Fortunately the modifications are modest, perhaps a better 2.0d and more refined interior would have been advisable.
