*facepalm* the song is clearly about false hope. lines like "you're not alone" just point to that - it's how religious people try to make their selves feel when things get rough. and it's saying: look at the most religious parts of this nation (places like the ones shown in the video): where has this faith gotten them? they are run-down and disparate. and desperate.

Dude ben himself has stated that its not a knock against religion...its about the people who believe in god but if they saw a homeless guy probably wouldn't give him a chance in hell... and if jesus did come back... he'd probably be similar to a homeless person. Basically it's talking about how how hypocritical some religious people are.

The TV evangelist is indeed Matt Lucas from the BBC show 'Little Britain'. I think he's a big fan of Ben's - the first time I saw Ben Folds Five at the Astoria in London back in 97, Matt was standing next to me.
