IMO, this isn't a simple final battle: it is a journey into Kefka's twisted mind; considering Kefka's final form is not shown before you actually fight him, the first three "parts" serve to build up anticipation: the higher you go, the deeper you go into Kefka's thoughts and ambitions, until you finally meet him, in a distubing angel-like form, as he believes himself to be God.

20 min composition for the final boss and a 30 min composition for the ending... every rpg ending after ff6 left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied. I guess my expectations are too high.

The best part of this song is that the third movement sounds like something in a Castlevania game, while the final movement gets your adreniline pumping. Gosh I love this battle music, and I never finished this game until two months ago.

I enjoy that image of Kefka. It truly speaks that despite all he's done, despite his power, and despite the fact that he believes himself to be god. Under that makeup, without those wings...he's just another man... and it is immensely refreshing to see Kefka as a normal man. I'm not saying he's a bad final boss or he's not epic or anything at all... It's just...look at him. He looks so...normal. It's amazing, for some odd reason.

The song itself is chaotic and is played in so many different keys. And also, during the final phase of Dancing made the time signature goes from common time to 7/8, and 7/8 is a very irregular time signature. I personally think this is Uematsu's greatest work. The song is befitting of a god of chaos, which is exactly what Kefka becomes. There are many great final themes but this one is the most dynamic and blood curdling. (Not to mention how he enters via Deus ex Machina is great!)

Oh come on. I mean, yeah Kefka is the greatest villian ever but I dun see why everyone has to knock sephiroth. That guy had a sense of style and grace and a kind of overwhelming presence that's hard to pull off properly. Well, he at least his did before all the add ons anyway.

I guess Uematsu really liked Kefka's role. He made every effort to create such a complex song. Helloooo? 10 minutes, so many different parts. Where do you get this nowadays?

Sephiroth is cool and people seem to love him. The reason Kefka is better (and probably the best video game villain)is because he is not cool. There is absolutely nothing good or cool about him. He is just awful.

I love how in the second form, all the bodies tangle around the coils of the machine. And then we get to the third form and Kefka is reclining on the machine in the form of Michelangelo's Pieta. If that's not symbolism, I don't know what is.

...what? I'm just trying to point out how his role as the new God of Magic twists and perverts our "established" meaning of good and evil. And the music for the third form proves it. What do you hear? A triumphant glorious anthem to the ghastly evils that Kefka has done. No video game boss can even -touch- this, in my book that I have seen so far.

I've always thought the tower was probably the most symbolic piece of work in any FF game ever made. If you've seen the tower with all three tiers together, you'll notice that it encompasses hell, earth, and heaven. The bottom tier has a hellish looking demon while the middle of the tower represents man through the human-like monsters in the middle. And above them is the heavenly figure (as you said a representation of the pieta). It's an awesome portrayal of these three realms.

And to add, Kefka above them all. It sort of symbolizes how Kefka views himself even above any other gods. His pride is just so astronomical in this game, to the point where he is delusional and psychotic. It sort of raises a question of whether all-powerful beings (gods) can take on both traits of good and evil. Kefka obviously in his delusions seeks nihilism upon the world. I'd rank him as a top villain because of his traits of NO emotion or consideration for life.

Regarding Gods having traits of both good and evil: Read up on the Greek Gods. There are quite a few stories where the gods are playing both sides. Read about Zeus, for example.

I think the creators of the game really do emphasize though his delusions through how he himself was a test subject of magicite (was that the word they used?). Genetic tests and such that warped his mind and made him more in a state of psychosis than anything. Ultimately, he becomes a nihilist. It's debatable whether or not nihilism is evil or not, but as human beings, we generally find it disturbing and wrong. Kefka really does have many traits that make him a great dynamic villain.
