From what I've read, Paul Simon doesn't even know what it's about. However, Rolling Stone broke down the song not too long ago. They think "schoolyard" represents a college campuses and "the radical preacher" represents Fr. Dan Berrigen, who was prominent in anti-war protests in the 1960s-70s and was on the cover of Newsweek for it. So, take that for what it's worth.
