This movie was filmed on location in Israel. The ruins of Avdat, the greatest Nabatean city in the Negev, lie on a limestone hill overlooking the desert. The remains include two impressive Bysantine churches, a wine press, and many other interesting finds. The place is under the auspices of the Avdat National Park.

Carl lost his battle with leukemia on February 23, 2004. He was slated to reprise his role with Neeley for the "Farewell Tour" in 2006. Corey Glover, famous for being the lead singer of the band Living Colour, was cast for the tour's Judas.

Yes, it's a genius beginning. They throw you right in at the exact moment Judas turns against Jesus. This opera is, I've always thought, Judas' tragedy rather than Jesus' story, and it rightly begins with Judas. Jesus is almost a side-character, in a way -- a less complex, less interesting character. Judas is the most complicated sort of villain -- the one who actually has a compelling and reasonable argument for what he is doing.

There is absolutely no doubt that the 1973 Norman Jewison film version is THE definitive version. Neeley, Anderson, Elliman, Mostel and Dennen are superb and have never been matched. The locations are stunning. Quite brilliant film and wonderful music and lyrics.

Agreed. JCS can survive a bad performance of Jesus, but will absolutely fail if someone gets Judas wrong. You can't play him evil, like even Corey Glover did. Judas is not evil in this opera. He is a man who puts the national liberation struggle before his spirituality -- a plausible, sincere idea. But tragically and ultimately wrong. Anderson got this perfectly, and delivered his lines with dignity and conviction rather than as a sneering caricature of evil, like most actors approach the role.

For whatever reason Judas did it,it was still my Lord who endured Gethsemane, the flogging, the mocking crowds, etc, etc, and He did it as the perfect sinless, spotless Lamb of God. I realize the script here created a conflict for dramatic emphasis, but actually if Jesus would have been angry or bitter, His sacrifice would have been like me dying for your sin,I can't because I'm not sinless! This was the point of the Jewish sacrificial Lamb, to foretell the death of the stainless Son of God!!!!

Tim Rice, the author of JC Superstar, uses the Gospels as an inspiration, but wrote quite a different tale. In my personal opinion, Rice is a better storyteller than whoever wrote the Gospels.

I'm not a member of any organization,if that's what you mean, I'm not comfortable with living up to people's expectations I guess. I've just listened to, and read anything and everything, and I've chosen to accept the Biblical account of Jesus, that His life and death were in perfect obedience to His Father, God. I could give you my reasons for believing Him to be God's Son.. but they're all mostly from the Bible and I don't think you'd accept that as proof.

When I saw this movie for the first time I was left with the impression that Judas was the only one of the lot (with possible exeption of JC himself), who actually had a clue about what was going on around him. While everyone else was running around thinking Jesus was going to lead them to paradise on earth Judas knew that if they poked the lion (the Roman) to much they would get the teeth, which is what ultimatly happened.

i adore this movie. and its also great that they show Judas as a disappointed man, not a traitor.
without Judas, Jesus cannot redeem us from our sins. read about the last supper in the Bible, it is quite interesting.
