He didn't need double-time riffs to make his guitar talk. Sometimes less is more.

One can certainly hear his influence on Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis. Too bad his life was so short. Had he lived it would have been interesting to match him with Django Reinhardt.

Were his solos arranged? How did he affect the part Lionel and Teddy had with the BG band?

Christian's solos weren't arranged - Goodman probably wouldn't have dared. It's true, however, that he played better and more imaginatively on informal bootleg recordings than he ever played on official studio dates with Goodman.

The main characteristic of Charlie's playing was how arpeggiated it was. Among his disciples were, like, every jazz guitarist who came after him. Also, his solos were NOT arranged.

Great stuff here! ... ( 7 months ago by bopmanfromspace)
Great stuff here! The tune is SOLO FLIGHT, recorded in March, 1941, and arranged by Jimmy Mundy. The original title was CHONK, CHARLIE, CHONK. Charlie and his electric Gibson guitar really sounds good in a big band setting. His style was and still is being copied or mimicked by just about everybody, including myself, and I will admit that most certainly, he taught us all how to play as far as elecrtic guitars are concerned and if anybody thinks otherwise, they're a stinking liar.

"he taught us all how to play as far as electric guitars are concerned" I doubt John Lee Hooker listened to Benny Goodman records much.

Well, it's impossible to tell. The blues legend Hooker may have listened to everybody. All I know is that T-Bone Walker gave John Lee Hooker his first electric guitar, and Charlie Christian taught T-Bone how to play guitar solos. At one time they both played in the same band.

"Well, it's impossible to tell." There may be an interview in which Hooker either says he did or didn't listen to Benny Goodman much. "Charlie Christian taught T-Bone how to play guitar solos." T-Bone began recording on guitar when Charlie was 12 years old, and Charlie later influenced T-Bone's style.

My Pop bought me a guitar when I was 13, but I didn't hear any Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, or Jeff Beck recordings until I was 15, So what? I don't compare myself to other musicians, nor do I knock or compare musical legends with each other, especially those that inspire me to play and that are no longer with us. Either I like what a person does, or I don't.

Blues players from his friend T-Bone to B.B. King and Chuck Berry were influenced by Charlie Christian. CC was known over and above his association with Goodman.

"CC was known over and above his association with Goodman." During the entire time Christian was famous and still well enough to play, he was with Goodman and Goodman was one of the two or so most famous instrumentalists in the world. Young musicians who were playing jazz in the '40s (which includes B.B. and Chuck, but not Hooker) tended to admire both Goodman and Christian and know Christian for his work with Goodman, and tended not to have ever heard Christian jam in Minton's or Monroe's.
