Lale Andersen made the original recording of Lili Marlene in 1939. After being broadcast on a German military radio station from Belgrade during WW2 the song became a huge favourite with troops on both sides. Lale Andersen (real name Liese-Lotte Helene Berta Bunnenberg) was born in Bremerhaven in 1905 and died in Vienna in 1972. The 1961 Eurovision entry came 13th.

Lale will certainly be singing in Heaven now, and sending blessings down upon you.
