Yes, that is correct, John MacDougal ended up having to moonlight at a satellite teleport around his hometown to make ends meet. While he was working there towards the end of his shift, he decided to accomplish one of the greatest telecom/broadcasting hijacks in history.
I read he was tempted to do it while coming across HBO's satellite & transponder while he was moving the teleport's uplink dish to a storage position (so it wouldn't pool up with rainwater if it were to rain).

I remember back in the 80's hearing about this as a kid. I thought it was kind of interesting how one guy with a satellite dish and some equipment could completely override HBO's signal. I think the guy ended up getting busted and several some federal prison time too. I think maybe someone he worked with ratted him out to the FCC or something. There was also a guy that did something like this to The Playboy Channel's signal shortly after this incident.

My dad remembers this happening - I asked him about it last year.
I wonder if anyone actually caught this on tape while that movie was airing on that night? Weird stuff!
