Lufthansa Airbus A320 wingstrike at Hamburg during Emma

Video Description:
Someone else shot this video of a Lufthansa Airbus A320 on a flight from Munich to Hamburg which hits the left wingtip and almost drags the right engine on runway 33 during extreme weather and gusting crosswinds caused by storm Emma.

Aircraft are certified to land in steady crosswinds (around 30 knots/55 km per hour) and crews are trained for this and do practice maximum crosswind landings in the simulator several times per year. The crosswind component at the time was around 20 to 25 knots which is within the croswind limitat
ion of the aircraft. Storms like this one called "Emma" on the 1st of March 2008 with high winds and gusts are however very demanding on the crew. Initially they had the required crab angle but during the transition from crab to slip (upwind wing has to be low) the pilot did not get enough righ
t wing down and caught a severe gust during the touchdown maneuver. The gust then lifted the wing which is why the aircraft rolled to the left and drifted across the runway. They are lucky they didn't cartwheel. The only correct option at this point was to go around. They landed about 20 minutes
later on a different runway without further incident. Over 70 flights were canceled in Frankfurt due to the storm Emma on 1st of March 2008.

not be flying for weeks on end.Like my spouse. He always says you don't get paid to fly a jet, you get paid to leave home
family behind. I don't want commuter pilots to think I think their job is less important.
someone else's airplane by taking an unnecessary chance. My husband would have refused this landing and gone around, and he's flown into some very dangerous airports, especially in South America. Which is probably why he has survived 36 years of commercial flying!
When they were barely over the fence it was allready clear that no rudder could ever cope with the new situation so why wait for another 10 seconds before going around?
laymen how many PIC hours he or she has! This video has nothing to do with flying skill, but more with over-estimating the skill of the person flying the plane. It could have been totally avoided
I'm sure SIM sessions will prove that it was stupid to do, but maybe flyable by a more experienced pilot.
Barbuda Crew (up coming pilot)
Heavy wind shear made conditions too dangerous for the airlines to land, said DIA spokesman Jeff Green.
The winds kept up all day long creating delays at DIA as planes were diverted to Colorado Springs.
Once the wind died down, all the flights were able to resume to DIA. That's how we do it here dumb europeans

Should the pilot have even been attempting to land in those conditions?! I would not like to have pilots taking that kind of reckless risk with my life! Surely those extreme wind conditions were outside of company protocol?
