Magnificent. Second only to CARRERAS in this aria. Placido is the best of all HUMANS for this one. Carreras is OUT OF THIS WORLD FOR THIS ONE.

overated my ass! you are jealous because you canadians do not have any famous opera singer or maybe you don't have any at all. my guess is that you don't know about opera and you're just a talker....what can you expect from canadians.....

you're an idiot. Also, Stratas is Canadian. So is Ben Heppner. Do you think that Bb sounds good? Get your ears checked.

Well said! I think the only other good interpreter of this aria, vocally speaking, is Luciano Pavarotti -- check out his performance as Don Jose at the Met on Deutsche Grammophon DVD. But French-wise, Domingo's pronunciation sounds way better than Pavarotti's, don't really know why...

Thanks, I will. Domingo is really good in other languages--he sings very convincingly in German too.

Why must you reply to someone's opinion with an insult against an entire country and its citizens? You must be very insecure.

You also had Vickers who did a great recording of this aria with the high Bb-flat sanged in beautyfull pianissimo, and the french-Canadian L
éopold Simoneau was a really good lyric tenor.

I believe the word you're looking for is "sung". Yep, Vickers had the balls to go for the B flat pp. It was quite cool.

I think this rendition is quite good. One has to admit though that the B flat is indeed not the best, and the 'quand' at 2:38-39 is pretty out of tune (should have been an A flat, but it goes too high due to the push).

The word is car first of all not quand. and its very typical of a tenor of this fach to give a bit of push to voice. It is what defines his voice type. extremely beautiful. nice job placido!!

You are right: it's car of course. Yet "bit of push to voice" is a bit of an understatement; "car" at 2:28-29 is out of tune AND pushed.

I think he's the best Don Jose you can find- he's always muscial (althboiugh the "quand" at 2.38 is sharp here- very unusual for domingo!), has enough weight for the role (which isn't right for lyric tenors), and it isn't high. The b flat sounds fine to me- this isn't a bright voice. Vickers was famous for this but his pronunciation is HORRIBLE and he sings falsetto a lot. Corelli is fantastic but not stylish enough. Look at the 1978 one with the amazing Kleiber conducting. It's brilliant.
