Yojimbo was the first in the series followed by Sanjuro - A Fist Full of Dollars was the First in the 'Dollars' saga which it was, as you say, a copy of Yojimbo. There were legal proceedings filed against Sergio Leone I believe........

Um...not quite. This story was written by three men, most notably the director of the film, Akira Kurosawa. There are elements based on truth, however. Such as the fact that poor samurai often protected peasant villages for food and lodging.

just took a history course on it actually :) it's tru fax. Samurai /were/ warriors (sp?)and were specifically separated from the peasants during the Shogun Hideyoshi's 'reign' so to speak, so that they could collect taxes and quiet the peasants by force if need be. It was during the Tokugawa's time of power that the samurai became, essentially, beaurocrats. :)

Not at all. You and I have the similar views actually. To add to your point, Kurosawa became famous for making films that are pre-Tokugawa era. According to his biography, he felt that the time of the Civil Wars were more visceral and interesting. There was more social mobility, which is typically unheard of in later periods of Japanese history. Hence, Kikuchiyo deciding to be a samurai rather than embrace his humble roots is a powerful social commentary that speaks volumes even today.

Although the film seems to be a bit behind in technological advantages for its time (particularly sound quality), it makes up for it with an intriguing story and interesting characters. The movie is about 3 1/2 hours long, and yet I was left wanting more, a credit to the writing and directing of the movie legend Akira Kurosawa. Excellent acting, score, and sets/props add to this hands-down Japanese classic.

I can't wait to watch it! I just found out about this because my fiance and I just bought the anime. I know you're gonna say the anime sucks compared to the real thing but hey its fun so far and without it I never would have looked up stuff on the internet and stumbled upon this movie's existence.
LOL the scene with Haihachi chopping wood, Gorobei being tested, and Kikuchiuyo's triangle are all reenacted exactly in the anime! So funny!
