Oil War - Nigeria

Uploaded by: journeymanpictures
Video Description:
June 2005
Nigeria's lucrative oil reserves may have enriched its politicians but they've brought little but misery to ordinary people. Now, a rebel group is fighting for a share of the profits. "I need help. I need help," begs a woman, clutching her young children in despair. Her home has just been demolished to create luxury housing for foreign oil workers. "The oil boom has turned into the oil doom!" laments Pastor Lekia. Across the Niger Delta, there's growing resentment at the oil industry. "Corruption pervades the whole place, starting with the way contracts are awarded," complains lawyer Ledum Mittee. "There seems to be some sort of collusion between the oil companies and those in power." But militia leader Asari Dokubo has vowed to sever that link. He's fighting to seize control of the oil and give it back to the people. "We own the oil!" he proclaims. "The thieves are the people in Abuja." And across Nigeria, young men are flocking to his call. Last September, he spooked the international markets and forced the price of oil to $50 a barrel by threatening to attack foreign oil companies. The government was forced to agree a truce but he's threatened to rearm unless oil companies leave. Nigerians no longer expect help from their own government. It's militia leaders like Asari who are winning their trust.

The people of Nigeria are OVERJOYED by all the things their gov't has done for them?? I'm sure the people celebrate having no running water or 24 hr.electricity, decent telephone lines, a reliable transportation system or roads upon which to conduct such. All the $ your corrupt politicians hid in America--where is that money now as America looks for $700B bailout I HATE America--I hope their fucking country crumbles
everyone turns a blind eye to aiding them as they have done to Nigeria

I have visited Nigeria and was brought to tears by what I saw. I have since read your constitution whereby the gov't MUST provide the necessities of life to its people. The oil companies, though they beg to differ, hold the power to make the Nigerian gov't accountable to its people. Now, Shell is planning on refining the oil in my country, Canada, and is fighting with the aboriginal peoples who live in the oil-laden land. Basards! They call B.C. Nigeria North!

The Nigerian gov't has NO conscience. And Abuja is a scam. I really like how foreign diplomats are carefully led through its streets only to avow there's nothing wrong in Nigeria. Visitors need to see the cities and villages outside of Abuja. Your gov't may try to keep you oppressed but they won't me. I'll everyone I can about the conditions rampant in Nigeria. Dussuh-have U ever been to Nigeria? If their life is indicative of what that "vital income" provides, they're better off without it!

"Nigeria as it is today, is not a nation. We did not think that just because the British created it this way, we were all bound by it. We thought that even if there was going to be a Nigeria, the component units should be ethnic groups"..."there should have been a Yoruba State, Igbo State, Hausa State, Ijaw State and the rest of the ethnic groups. That should have been the basis of our unity." ----- Anthony Enahoro; Nigerian Nationalist. This Day Newspapers. Saturday September 27, 2008.

The huge ... ( 1 month ago by unouluvme912)
The huge environmental destruction of the Nigerian land makes farming very difficult. There have been instances where oil wells exploded and literally RAINED crude oil all over farmlands. The air pollution (gas flaring, anyone?) means that the natural rain is very polluted and that makes it hard to grow and nurture food that can be safely eaten. It's not just the Nigerians not wanting to farm - it's them not being ABLE to farm.

Sad situations...the West needs Oil to function but at the same time profits go towards propping up dictators and creating anarchy in the Oil regions. Oil truly is a curse; the devils tears. As a Libertarian I find the political beliefs of both conservatives and liberals on the discussion laughable. There must be another way to extract resources for the good of all without having the rest of the world hate us.

Poverty is largely cultural, if they had a western value system they could be wealthy even without oil, but without it even if the oil wealth was distributed fairly they would not be wealthy.
