Yeah! Totally agree! This is definitely one of my favorite performances!! Throught out this 6 minutes you can feel her pain, her humiliation and the love that she still has for her husband. She was freaking amazing!!

I agree as well. It was a matter of quality over quantity. And she was a worthy winner, at least compared to the other four nominees: Foster, not to much screen time either but another memorable role; Laurie, hystrionic; Alexander, less screen time than Beatrice Straight and Grant, well, her film was nothing to write home about either and she had won the year before.

For the record, I think that, no matter their performances that year, ALL five nominees are absolutely superb actresses, esp. (in my opinion) Lee Grant and Jane Alexander.

Beatrice Straight was AMAZING, but my choice would probably be Piper Laurie. "Histrionic" or not, she nailed it. It's tricky to play a religious, murderous fanatic while still remaining truthful, but she pulled it off. AND she made it darkly funny. '76 was a great year for this category.

This is one of the unfortunate years for the academy, when nearly all awards were off. Beatrice Straight had one of the easiest roles in history: she had to scream and cry, the end. Jodie Foster was more deserving that year, as was Robert DeNiro over the unimpressive Peter Finch. In her six minutes on screen, she failed to convey any sort of character or acting; a child can cry and yell. It takes an actress to portray a truly hurt wife, and Beatrice Straight just isn't that.

I feel that William Holden should have won Best Actor that year. He was so much better than Peter Finch, who was one-dimensional.

It was just 5 minutes. If you think she was very emotional, crying and passionate that's the reason she deserved Oscar, you are wrong. Piper Laurie in Carrie showed MORE emotions, MORE crying MORE passion and had LARGER role. Laurie showed ambiguity both innocence and cruelty, compassion and ruthlessness, she makes you hate her and sympathize with her at the same time, she is on the top of acting. And I don't see these elements in Beatrice's simple, small role.
Piper Laurie's ... ( 1 month ago by dx771)
Piper Laurie's character in Carrie is immortal. People still watch this movie Carrie and her character is still popular, not only for horror movies fans but for all people who is interested in movies. Her dialogues with Sissy Spacek are MORE emotional than this short Beatrice's episode. And especially Laurie's monologue at the end is MORE emotional, MORE passionate than this Beatrice performance. Beatrice character is lost in time but Laurie's character is immortal, she should have won Oscar.

Who gives a rats ass, if Carrie is a classic and Network isn't.
GET OVER IT THAT WAS 1976. AND SHE DESERVED IT.
