"Faurisson was condamned for "contestation de crime contre l'humanit
é", i.e. because he denies holocaust. You have to distingue the two charges, wich are not the same. There is a specific article for Holocaust denial in our Code." Even so, was wrong to even charge him for "inciting racial hatred and for racial defamation", as he said himself. The Pen's statement
I mentioned did not itself suggest negation, and according to wikipedia, he was convicted for THIS statement. I don't speak french.

"Even so, was wrong to even charge him for "inciting racial hatred and for racial defamation", as he said himself." And why ? I don't understand. Faurisson had expressed antisemitic ideas so he was logically charged for inciting racial hatred. About the Le Pen's statement, you don't mentionned it completely.

I've never heard Faurisson expressing any antisemitic ideas per se. I need more sources.

I wonder if Prof Chomsky would defend the right to exercise freedom of speech of someone who, say, incites teenagers in committing collective suicide, or enter a polygamist sect etc.
No doubt freedom of speech is important but isn't there a line to be drawn between harmful speech and unharmful speech?
Who would protect our children if there were no laws sanctionning certain speeches?
Isn't democracy the rule by the people, and FOR the people?
Holocaust denial is dangerous!

If you don't believe in the right of others to express views you deplore, then you don't believe in free speech. If there isn't a crime committed then there should be NO punishment. Chomsky makes it clear that is his view of Free Speech.

"Never believe anything in politics until it has been officially denied." - Otto von Bismarck
Refuting the accepted Holocaust story will earn you years in prison in 13 European countries. Why would the truth have to hide behind such draconian laws? The Holocaust deserves to be researched, the controversy exposed, and public debate encouraged. Incarceration for holding an opinion is unquest
ionably fascist. How can we so willingly persecute those who merely *think* differently than us?

If you accept there's a line, sooner or later that line will rise higher and higher until you can be jailed for saying you think the color of some flag aren't elegant. Think about it like death penalty. It's not that Charles Manson doesn't deserve death for his crimes. It's that we can't accept to become murderers ourselves.

If you read French, I strongly suggest the book by Pierre Vidal-Naquet, "Les assassins de la memoire" (The assassins of memory). There is a whole chapter about Chomsky and the Faurisson Affair.
I believe that Chomsky has made a big mistake in defending Faurisson's "civil right" of saying that no extermination ever took place. Also, I am sure that Chomsky knows it's a mistake, but doesn't have the guts to aknowledge it. It reminds me when Chomsky took the defense of brutal Pol Pot.

And to answer your question: of course there is somewhere a line to be drawn. Already 2500 years ago, Plato warned that democracy can easily degenerate into "juvenile tyranny" (Republic VIII).

You're either for free speech or against it. Doctor Toben, a noted revisionist was recently arrested for his views - he had committed a thought-crime according to the German government and has been arrested by BRITISH police! The whole issue makes a mockery of law and liberty "Make sure you agree with us, or else!". Whatever happened to science?

Je ne crois pas que l'holocauste est un mensonge, mais je crois aussi que Monsieur Faurisson est le victime dans toute cette histoire. C'est comme meme absurde d'aller en prison a cause du dementi d'un evenement historique.
I don't see why you ... ( 1 month ago by Honlohoho1)
I don't see why you write "civil right" in quotation marks. It really is his civil right to deny any historical event. No free man deserves to rot in prison just for revisionism. The problem with the holocaust in some countries, as well as mine, is that people take the holocaust too seriously...
